About Helen

Having an opportunity to tutor students is both rewarding and fulfilling in that you can see immediate progress. I feel a sense of real accomplishment when I know I have helped a student to reach their full potential. My education consists of a Masters Degree in Business. While I was attending college, I tutored several of my classmates in research paper composition and the proper forms in writing styles, i.e A.P.A, and M.L.A. I have tutored for over two years both international and local students.. I have found that students want to learn and, with honest encouragement, will do their best. I provide a skill level evaluation to measure the strengths and problem areas. My expertise is professional instruction/tutoring in all aspects of English, including reading, comprehension, phonics, vocabulary, grammar, and writing for K-12 students and adult ESL students.

My tutoring methods are a proven plan that has consistently helped students. I develop effective study habits that lead to their confidence in their abilities. I also assist with the student's classes they are currently taking to ensure immediate success. English (Language Arts) has always been a favorite study for me since elementary school, and I wish to share that same enthusiasm with my students. As an experienced tutor, I track session to session progress and provide regular feedback to parents to ensure you can see the progress your child is making.

I also tutor in advanced essay writing which is especially helpful to students who are preparing for college entrance exams, taking advance placement courses, or beginning their college studies.

My individualized tutor technique is to provide the undivided attention, 1 to 1 tutoring, which is not possible in a classroom. While working one-to-one allows me to focus on the student's specific needs and tailor instruction to fit his or he pace of learning and unique style.

I sincerely look forward to working with you as your tutor to help you achieve your goals.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

English has always been a favorite subject for me to learn while I was in school and I really enjoy teaching and tutoring at all levels in this subject. I have a graduate degree that has allowed me, and as a requirement, to successfully attend in excess of 14 credit hours in English. While I tutor my student, I especially try to incorporate visual guides along with the requirements that need to be committed to memory. I tutor about all the parts of speech, grammar and sentence structure. It is very rewarding indeed to see how well students respond to positive feedback.

ACT Math

I have two graduate degrees in business and have studied several math classes as a requirement necessary for the completion of my graduate degrees and undergraduate degree. For example, Statistics, Algebra I and II, Trigonometry and Geometry. I am proficient in lower levels of math as well. I have several years of successful tutoring experience tutoring students K-6 and have also tutored high school students. Most recently, I have been engaged as a math substitute teacher in Raleigh, NC working with middle school students.

I really enjoy teaching and tutoring students. Each student learns differently and at their own pace. The method of teaching and tutoring that has worked well for students is work plan that offers a challenge. I assign homework and each homework assignment is reviewed during next session.

ACT Reading

My educational background consists of six years of formal English, both as a graduate student and as an undergraduate student. An important part of English or Language Arts has to do with reading and reading comprehension. My tutoring style is adapted to each student as an individual, because each student learns at a pace that is comfortable for them. I also assign plenty of homework and I go over this homework during each tutoring session.

I have successfully tutored several years with students ranging from K through 6. My graduate degree is in business, having graduated with honors.

I might add that English has always been one of my most favorite and enjoyable classes. I take pride that the English language is properly executed. Experience in tutoring two international students and assisting them with their English skill delivery. Tutoring methods I find very helpful are homework exercises with class participation and exchange of assignments.

ACT Science

I have lived in North Carolina for several years. I graduated from Mount Olive University and Strayer University, respectively. I have obtained two Master's degrees. While in college I took several science courses including Biology, Anatomy and Physiology I and II and Chemistry; total semester hours 16. For the last eight years, I have successfully tutored students in 2nd through 12th grades in various subjects. Tutoring is very rewarding to me because I truly enjoy seeing my students make progress while reaching their personal goals!

I specialize in tutoring students who need extra help in preparation for their ACT science exam. Having taught several areas of science, including subjects such as biology, anatomy and physiology I and II, I am able to tutor in these areas, as well. I usually incorporate manipulative, hands-on learning and games into my tutoring. I assign homework after almost every lesson, and am available for assistance if you get "stuck" during an assignment. I administer a preassessment, mid-assessment and a post-assessment in order to determine strengths, needs, and progress.

I hold myself to a high standard, and if my students are not satisfied, I want to know so we can remedy any issues or problems. I try to be flexible with days and times.

Anatomy

I have completed six semesters hours of both anatomy and physiology and routinely offered tutoring of students in the same course of study. Most recently, I have held Biology tutoring classes for secondary high school students. While I have several years of tutoring experience, it is always rewarding for me to see the look on students' faces when they have accomplished their educational goals. The study of science is very interesting and especially having the opportunity to explain how all the body's systems seamlessly work. My educational masters is in business administration and health care administration.
I hold a masters in public administration as well.

ASVAB

The ASVAB examination contains several sections. My educational background is comprised of two master's degrees in business. I have successfully tutored students in all of the following subjects.

General Science: I have completed high school chemistry and biology.

Undergraduate sciences: Anatomy and physiology, six semester hours. Biology, three semester hours; chemistry three semester hours.

My tutoring methods are refined practice exams with educational explanations and examples. Copious amounts of instructional homework gets reviewed; assignments and students' questions are addressed.

Elementary (K-6th)

Hello students! I am here because I absolutely love teaching and tutoring. I hold two Master’s Degrees. I was fortunate to be allowed to join a prestigious program called ‘Teach for America', where I gained valuable experience and was also trained in teacher specialties. I live in Raleigh NC and have several years experience teaching students from two of our elementary schools. The grades I have tutored are K through sixth grade levels. I have worked as a substitute teacher helping students that are in elementary and middle schools with their reading, and Language Arts. If students are struggling in a particular class, it means that they did not get a strong foundation in the basics. My goal is to change that. I understand that students can be taught in different ways to solve a math problem or understand how I can help the students develop improved study habits. My teaching style is to determine the student’s learning style and I use this as a gauge. Not only do I care for the students’ growth, but also for that child as a person.

Elementary Science

My educational background consists of not only business but also many science courses as well. I have two masters degrees of which several science courses were necessary; for example, anatomy and physiology, biology, chemistry, etc. I have several years' experience in tutoring students and experience in helping them to learn all the marvelous studies that make up the scientific world. The study of science is very interesting because it is always changing in so many ways.

English

My educational background consists of six years of formal English.

ESL/ESOL

I feel that one of my greatest strengths as an ESL/ESOL teacher is managing a classroom and building and maintaining a warm, successful learning classroom environment. Having three years of classroom experience, I have found that a method of teaching ESL that works especially well is classroom participation utilizing English language only. In addition, I have demonstrated English proficiency as a college undergrad and graduate student compiling several classes within the boundaries of this subject. I try to make classes fun and engaging and realize all student have their own learning space.

GED

I enjoy tutoring and teaching students, especially when I know I can help them improve upon their GED pass rate. I hold two masters degrees in business. Most recently I have worked as a substitute teacher in the Wake County School District working with K-12 students, middle school students and high school students. My style and method of tutoring involves the student because each student learns at his or her own individual pace. I reinforce tutoring sessions with homework, instructions, and I always try to incorporate a considerable amount of one on one interaction with each student. Teaching is very rewarding and I have been fortunate enough to teach and tutor with great student success.

GMAT

I have taken the GMAT test.
English subject areas that I have tutored students in include composition, proper writing mechanics and sentence structure.

I have several years' tutoring experience and have taken 12 semester hours of college English.

I have two years' experience in tutoring high school students to better understand math structure. I have completed math classes in Algebra and Math 540, quantitative reasoning.

Grammar

My educational background consists of a business administration graduate degree. I have years of understanding the importance of proper grammar and teaching grammar. It is part of the English language and must be incorporated into the lesson plan. Grammar is central to the teaching and learning of languages. It is also one of the more difficult aspects of the language to teach well. Because English has always been one of my favorite classes, all aspects of this subject have been very easy to me. I am excellent at teaching this subject.

Handwriting

My educational background, having obtained my graduate degree in business, affords me the opportunity and expertise to teach handwriting. Handwriting is a learned process and each person’s handwriting signature will differ. However, with a few teaching and learning techniques, an individual’s handwriting/penmanship can be perfected thereby making it legible. I was educated in the Palmer method of penmanship which was developed by Mr. Palmer in the 1930’s and was still in use when I learned writing and penmanship in school. My presentation of a lesson plan and exercises consist of six basic prerequisites that children must have before handwriting begins: They are as follow:
1. Small muscle development
2. Eye-hand coordination
3. Ability to hold utensils or writing tools
4. Capacity to smoothly form basic strokes such as lines and circles
5. Letter perception, including the ability to recognize forms, notice likeness and differences, infer the movements necessary for the production of form and give accurate verbal descriptions of what is seen
6. Orientation to printed language, which involves the visual analysis of letters and words along with right/left discrimination.
Teaching writing and teaching penmanship are very rewarding for me in that each student’s penmanship example is as different as each student that I teach.

Literature

If one loves to read, one should spend their valuable time reading literature. I enjoy reading and appreciate quality literature and books. Along with this theme, I want to express and help my student to realize that same importance and why literature is important. I have an MBA, and several quarter hours involved with Literature which makes me qualified in this subject.

Phonics

Correct pronunciation is important in speaking the English language. I was taught phonics for six years while I was in school and still use that skill today. My experience in tutoring two foreign students proper language skills while emphasizing the importance on knowing and practicing phonics has been rewarding. I hold a graduate degree in business. I continue to teach that there is a relationship between spelling and sound patterns (phonics).

Physiology

I have completed six semesters hours of both anatomy and physiology and routinely offered tutoring of students in the same course of study. Most recently, I have held Biology tutoring classes for secondary high school students. I have several years of tutoring experience and it is always rewarding for me to see the look on students' faces when they have accomplished their educational goals. The study of science is very interesting and especially having the opportunity to explain how all the body's systems seamlessly work. My educational masters is in business administration and health care administration.
I hold a masters in public administration as well.

Prealgebra

My educational background has allowed me to teach and tutor students in prealgebra. I have completed two years of high school algebra and one year of undergraduate algebra. I teach part-time within the Wake County School District teaching and tutoring prealgebra courses.

Proofreading

Having recently obtained my graduate degree in business, I can appreciate how very important excellent proofreading skills are. These types of skills reflect upon our ability to become detailed and review our work. While I tutor my students, I emphasize this critical skill.

Psychology

The reason I am here is because I love to teach and tutor. I have earned two graduate degrees in business and public health. College psychology was a required subject of which I have six semester hours.

I enjoy psychology because it gives me a better understanding of how people think and react. I have four years experience as a professional school counselor. Through this role, I have worked extensively with students on the college admissions process and SAT and ACT Prep. I have also worked individually with students to address academic needs across all subject areas, including tutoring them in subject areas as well as overall study skills.

I was also a member of a faculty nominated executive council, responsible for the professional development of teachers throughout a large high school. In this capacity, I also oversaw and made recommendations for a school-wide tutoring programs.

My tutoring style is a style that exhibits patience because each student learns at their own pace. Great tutors make great students.

Public Speaking

As a member of Toastmasters International, I have spoken publicly on several occasions. I am aware of what makes a good speaker and having confidence speaking before a group requires that one has prepared their material and/or topic beforehand. I hold the public relations office at my college, which requires giving speeches before various groups. With my speaking experience, I can encourage and teach a student to become an awesome speaker. Having completed my Master's has given me several classroom speaking opportunities.

SAT Math

SAT Reading

My educational background consists of six years of formal English, both as a graduate student and as an undergraduate student. An important part of English or Language Arts has to do with reading and reading comprehension. My tutoring style is adapted to each student as an individual, because each student learns at a pace that is comfortable for them. I also assign plenty of homework and I go over this homework during each tutoring session.

I have successfully tutored several years with students ranging from K through 6. My graduate degree is in business, having graduated with honors.

Experience in tutoring two international students and assisting them with their English skill delivery. Tutoring methods I find very helpful are homework exercises with class participation and exchange of assignments.

SAT Writing

Tutoring is very rewarding for me when I see the sense of accomplishment on my students' faces as they improve their writing skills. I have successfully tutored and taught the art of writing skills for numerous years here in Raleigh and throughout Wake County schools. Most recently, I have tutored both at the middle school level and high school. I also tutor students that want to improve their SAT writing scores so they will be better prepared for college performance. I have two graduate degrees, both are in business administration. The method of tutoring style that I find to work work very well is when students are encouraged to learn at their own pace.

Sociology

Currently I have two graduate degrees whereby I have taken a total of 9 semester hours of undergraduate and graduate courses in Sociology. Having the opportunity to tutor students is very rewarding because what I see in my students is a desire to learn and get good grades in school. That is my goal as a tutor. I want each student to do his or her very best. While in school, I was fortunate enough to help and tutor students with sociology assignments and answer questions as it related to Sociology. Currently, I do private tutoring in two of our high schools here in North Carolina. I have several years of successful tutoring experience. The general goal of tutoring is to provide the student with as much knowledge and guidance as possible without preventing the student from learning on his or her own, and a good tutor will have skills and knowledge in terms of Sociology concepts and teaching concepts.

Speech

I am an accomplished speaker and have enjoyed giving speeches at various types of seminars, am a member of Toastmaster's International, along with holding the public relations officer position within an university. I have given speeches while earning both my undergraduate and graduate degrees. Additionally, I have also conducted training seminars within my current employment. I feel I am very qualified to tutor students and help them to improve their speaking skills.

Spelling

I have the education, experience and dedication to instill in my student the importance of correct spelling. If one does not know the correct spelling of a word, dictionaries do wonders. I take pride in being an accomplished speller, and might add that phonics play an important role in spelling. Experience in tutoring has involved spelling as well.

Study Skills

My study skills and communication skills are excellent as I have recently obtained my graduate degree in business. Good time management, setting aside the necessary amount of time to complete the student's assignments, is encouraged by this tutor. I have used these same principles while engaged in tutoring my students. I have a passion to help others.

TOEFL

I have completed two graduate degrees with a strong emphasis in business and, of course, the English language. I am well qualified to teach TOEFL because of my education and tutoring experience in the use of language arts. TOEFL consists of four sections; reading, listening, speaking, and writing.
My educational background has provided me with the necessary skills to provide students with an academic understanding of those sections I have mentioned. I have several years' experience teaching within the English language subjects. I find that tutoring students is richly rewarding when I see such positive results shared with enthusiasm.

Vocabulary

I have a graduate degree in business administration which has helped me to develop a well rounded vocabulary. I urge students to complete a prepared list of chosen vocabulary words and I ask each student to incorporate these words into sentences. This method has significantly helped students in remembering the words and their proper meaning as well. I also stress to my students that one's vocabulary is something we build on each day. Other aspects of the English language can be incorporated as well, such as spelling and grammar. I take much pride in tutoring students in this subject. Students are eager to learn the importance of having a functional vocabulary. I have found that students want to understand why it is so important that they make the proper word choice.

Writing

I am an extroverted individual with a quick wit and spontaneous nature. I most certainly have “exceptional oral and written communication skills". I emphasize the type of writing of which a student is most likely to enjoy, this can be on any subject. Encouraging the student to write is paramount for his or her success. Both my education and experience well qualify me for any writing assignment. The student usually leads here in choosing the subject/topic he or she wishes to write about.
