Lehigh University (Master's)
Hello! I am a fully certified middle and high school English teacher. I recently graduated from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA with an MA in Secondary Education and concentration in English. While attending Lehigh, I taught 7th, 10th, and 12th grade students. This experience honed my skills as an instructor and provided me with a range of techniques to build a curriculum for varying age groups as well as different types of learning styles.I earned my BA in English at Lafayette College where my talent for writing was acknowledged when I was recommended to become a peer reader/editor by my English professor. It was at Lafayette where I earned an appreciation for writing (both creative and formal) as well as grammar.
I am prepared to teach English (reading, writing, editing and grammar) at an introductory, intermediate, and advanced level. I have previous experience working with students who are both familiar with or just learning English, so I prepared to take any student willing to learn. I am also ready to work closely with any student in order to build an individualized curriculum (short or long term) based entirely on your comfort with the subject matter. Though I am certified in secondary education (7-12) I am willing to work with students of all ages.
A little about myself:
For the past four years, I have worked as a tutor for students entering college at Borough of Manhattan Community College (BMCC). The students I worked had failed the "Reading and Writing" portion of the BMCC entrance exam and required intensive, one-on-one tutoring. At first, I was not sure I would like the job considering I had never worked as an instructor in the past and had never been formally trained in education. I was surprised to find that I truly enjoyed working with students. I found myself genuinely happy whenever I got the news that a student had passed the entrance exam and would be able to further their academic career in college. I was just entering college as an undergraduate student when I began tutoring, so teaching became an interesting and viable career path for me. I continued tutoring for the program for the next four years as I pursued my BA in English. Last year, I returned to BMCC as a full instructor and taught my first college-level class.
I enjoy writing essays and proofreading. During my stay at BMCC, I helped write and edit a portion of the “Student Testing Guide” used by incoming students to help better prepare them for the college entrance exam.
Experience as a teacher
I have had experience teaching across a broad spectrum of classrooms and grades during and after my graduate courses at Lehigh University. While at Lehigh, I had the chance to work with students in a 7th grade classroom as a student-teacher teaching grammar and writing techniques. This was the first time many of my students had been formally exposed to the construction of a well crafted sentence. Hello! I am a fully certified middle and high school English teacher. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
