About Sheila

I love languages and communicative arts and have been tutoring in that broad area for many years. Specifically, my graduate and undergraduate degrees are in Spanish Literature, though I also tutor English literature and writing, ESL, and public speaking,

In the first lesson, we'll do a bit of a short interview to help me assess the student's needs or see where the challenges are if there is an issue of poor grades or concept retention. Sometimes the problem is a little different from what the student or parent initially thinks, like when we go to the doctor and are sure we've got this, but it turns out to be that. Symptoms can be tricky to interpret, so I like to ask a few questions, listen, and see if we can't figure out what's causing the challenge and determine the best method to tackle it. Then we do a little work together so I can see how the student thinks through a task and communicates with me.

After that, I set out to challenge, but not overwhelm, the student with each lesson. I like to do this by framing the subject matter through the student's own point of view and assigning work intended to meet challenging but attainable goals. Individual assignments depend on the student's needs, but there are always assignments, and modeling the work or doing a few examples together is always our first step with a new assignment.

When we get together, I'll look at the work, and most of the lessons will be actual oral practice or discussion, depending on the subject matter. In short, the student does mechanical work individually (practicing writing, worksheets, etc.) and communicative work with me (discussion, conversation, oral practice, etc.).

With that in mind, please contact me if you need guidance with language learning (Spanish and ESL), writing and grammar in English or Spanish, or public speaking. I look forward to helping you meet your goals in any of these areas.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

With 10+ years' experience tutoring ESL and experience as an EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teacher, I can help students of all levels with ESL or ESOL, including grammar, writing and accent reduction.

A former EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teacher outside the US, I am familiar with the common mistakes new or limited English speakers make and can help you identify and clearly guide you as you improve your English.

I can work with any ESL and ESOL student, but native speakers of Spanish will have a particular advantage if tutoring with me. My fluency in Spanish and experience teaching EFL in Mexico have helped me develop a keen awareness of the relationship between English and Spanish. This allows me to more effectively help Spanish speakers begin to think differently about English as they improve their language skills.

Public Speaking

I have studied public speaking techniques as part of my undergraduate curriculum in the humanities and have presented numerous times in classes as well as at academic conferences.

I had a panic attack the first time I had to deliver a speech in college, and I slowly overcame that to the point that I no longer even get nervous.

My formal education on the topic in addition to my own experience with overcoming stage fright allows me to help others discover what ares of public speaking they need to work on and to help them develop those skills.

Spanish

I tutor beginner-advanced Spanish, including literature, civilization (culture & history) and writing, pronunciation, conversation, and accent reduction.

An honors Spanish graduate (BA), I have studied a range of topics related to Spanish & Latin American studies, including all of those listed above. I love literature, grammar and cultural studies, and my academic (research) interest in the field is Mexican cultural studies.

As a native English speaker, former English as a Foreign Language teacher (EFL), and near-native Spanish speaker, I have a keen awareness of the relationship between English and Spanish. This means I can help my students learn to conceptualize Spanish in a different way so that it becomes easier for comprehend and retain.

I enjoy helping high school and college students, as well as adults, with all levels of Spanish.

Trumpet

I have played for over 20 years, since the age of 10, and I originally majored in music (on trumpet) in college on partial scholarship before switching to Spanish. I still play regularly as a hobby and in a local wind ensemble.

I have successfully given lessons before, and as a professional educator, I understand how to work with students and break down concepts into attainable goals.

Writing

Where writing is concerned, I specialize in academic writing in English and Spanish, where there is always an argument to make. Even if you are not writing a "persuasive essay," you are still trying to win your reader over: perhaps you want to convince them that your thesis is true or perhaps you want them to understand what makes you a great candidate for a school's program.

I can help high school and college students with the following: brainstorming & outlining, focusing & writing a thesis statement, organization, grammar, structure, conciseness (one of the most valuable aspects of any written work!), editing and more.

In addition to my many undergraduate essays and papers in the humanities (all of which garnered high A's), I have published in my field (Spanish) in English and written two undergraduate theses. The result of that is that I have been through the writing ringer, so to speak, and have a firm grasp of how to organize and edit effectively.

I can also be of service in the area of college entrance essays, statements of purpose/interest, etc. and help you write the application essay that reflects what your school or organization wants to know.

Great tutor!

My daughter had a very challenging honors spanish teacher and needed help with conversation skills. Working with Sheila significantly increased her skill and her confidence. Sheila's love of the spanish language is obvious and contagious. My daughter loved Shiela's sense of humor and 'no-stress' style, and I sincerely appreciated Sheila's reliability, flexibility and professionalism. We are very g
