About Michelle

I earned my Ph.D. in history from the University of Texas at Austin, my M.A. (with distinction) from California State University Northridge, and my B.A. from the University of California at Santa Cruz, where I graduated with college honors and honors in the major. I'm available to tutor History, English, Russian, reading, writing, study skills, and the reading/writing/vocabulary components of all standardized tests. I have three years of teaching experience at the University of Texas at Austin, where I lectured, led weekly discussion groups, organized exam preparation sessions, and held office hours in which students consulted with me on an individual basis to help them succeed academically. I am currently teaching through the Extended Campuses of Northern Arizona University.

I have professional experience designing learning comprehension questions for undergraduate level U.S. history textbooks published by one of the most prominent higher education publishers in the world. I have many years of research and writing experience, and my articles have been published in peer-reviewed academic journals and edited volumes. I have over three years of experience as a private tutor, and have worked with students of all age groups - from elementary school to college students and adult learners. I try to engage the attention of my students by making the material easier to relate to and understand. I have a passion for teaching, a friendly disposition, and I quickly establish a good rapport with all of my students.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I have taught "The United States to 1865," "The United States since 1865," and "The United States in the World" as college courses at both the University of Texas at Austin and Northern Arizona University. I also work for ETS/College Board grading AP US History exams each June. I am therefore fully versed in the grading standards for AP US History, and for college-level US History courses.

English

My students have dramatically improved their performance in both written and spoken English.

Public Speaking

I have years of experience with public speaking. I have presented numerous scholarly papers at conferences all over the United States. I can help not only with delivery and presentation, but also with content and clarity.

Reading

Reading is one of the most important life skills and a prerequisite for success in any field. I can help students achieve a higher level of reading comprehension and encourage younger students to develop a genuine enthusiasm for reading.

Russian

I have studied Russian formally for five years. I have taken numerous college courses in Russian language and culture, and have even studied Russian at Moscow International University.

SAT Reading

There are certain key strategies that can prepare students for the SAT reading section. I use materials from actual SAT tests to help students achieve higher scores on their SATs.

SAT Writing

The SAT writing component is one of the most difficult for students to master. I use actual SAT testing material to help develop students' writing abilities.

Study Skills

I earned a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin, an M.A. from California State University Northridge (With Distinction), and a B.A. from the University of California at Santa Cruz, where I graduated with College Honors and Honors in the Major (History). Needless to say, I know what it takes to succeed academically, and I can help students develop the study skills that they need to succeed as well.

Writing

I have published articles in reference works, peer-reviewed academic journals, and edited volumes. I can help students with all aspects of the writing process - researching, developing and organizing ideas, and structuring essays - in addition to editing for grammar, style, and content. Regardless of the topic, there are certain things that make an essay good, and I can help students develop their writing ability so that they can clearly develop and sustain an argument about virtually anything.
