Fairfield University (History)
Central Connecticut University (Graduate Coursework)
I taught history in the Wolcott, Connecticut public schools for 35 years, spending most of my career on the high school level. After retiring in 2006, I tutored home-bound students before moving to North Carolina in 2007. Since establishing residence here I have been a substitute teacher in the Wake County public schools. During my career I have taught all high school grades and levels, establishing the Advanced Placement United States History program in my high school and teaching that course for 14 years. I have always approached the classroom and my responsibilities as an instructor on the simple premise that any student can be successful given the opportunity and incentive to learn. The subject of history has been my passion since I was a student and my goal has consistently been to share that enthusiasm with my students. As much as the student will need to understand the subject material, I feel that it is most important that the skills of writing, research, and problem solving be emphasized through any course work. Throughout my career I have found that the best part of teaching is working with young people and playing a small part in their preparation for the future.

I was having difficulty writing a paper and nearing my deadline. I was very relieved with Robert C.'s prompt response. We met at my school. He was extremely helpful. His experience, especially his knowledge of history, was just what I needed. I was able to complete my paper with confidence. I would call upon him for help or recommend him without hesitation. Thank you, Robert C.!
Bob was very prepared with materials for our tutoring sessions. He has extensive knowledge in the area of history and was easy to talk to and learn from. I could understand him and get my questions answered. He could relate to what I was learning and what I had to do to succeed in my specific class. He has made a difference in raising my grade!
I had a history teacher who only taught via lecture and I really struggled. Robert is very experienced as a teacher, and even though it wasn't the specific history that he taught, he was very knowledgeable. He always offered to help me outside of the sessions by reading papers of mine or sending me good sources.
He only asked that I tell him what I wanted to focus on in that session, so he could bring books, sources, and specific facts that he used when he was a teacher. I have changed math tutors a few times this year, but I have stuck with him for history. I have and would recommend him to anyone seeking help in history.
Very easy to work with and schedule with my busy teen. Always very prepared for the AP history lesson as it coincides with the school instruction. Has been very helpful.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I concentrated in United States history in my undergraduate and graduate studies. I developed the Advanced Placement United States history program at Wolcott High School in Connecticut where I taught the course for 14 years before retiring in 2006. As with all areas in the study of history a focus on writing and study skills must be emphasized.
I have successfully tutored several students on the college level in the area of European history and Western Civilization. It is important for the student to gain confidence in the areas of writing and study skills in order to be successful in the study of history.
I have worked with students on both the high school and junior college level in the area of United States Government and Politics. Recent events have clearly indicated that informed and knowledgeable citizens will be the key to maintaining American democracy.
