In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
English as a Second Language teaches students that are non-native speakers of English to be proficient in the language. It goes from the lowest level to the highest one, then they can go to study regular grammar and literature in English. I majored in Spanish with an ESL endorsment. I taught ESL at a high school in Dallas, TX. I am from Colombia and I came to the United States when I was 16 years old. It was really hard for me to immerse in the new culture specially because I did not know a single word in English. It was with patient, dedication and some really good ESL teachers that I succeeded in learning the language and then went to college. Since then I wanted to help students to learn English and become active members in their community as well as to have the access to the many opportunities that this wonderful country offers. It is gratifying to give back and to feel useful in helping others achieve their dreams.
