About Elizabeth

I don't remember a time before I tutored. I was homeschooled, and I always loved helping the younger kids in my group with their schoolwork. When I went to a public high school and found out that my school had no tutoring program, I founded one, working for two years as the only available peer tutor at a Virtual Early College. There, I tutored math, science, English, Spanish, and Latin.

I went to Appalachian State University as a Chancellor's Scholar and member of the honors college, and began working for University Tutoring Services in my second semester, tutoring math, art history, biblical studies, Spanish, and Latin. Although I enjoyed that and will always be glad to work with college students, my heart has always been with grade school students, and I look forward to the opportunity to work with them again upon my graduation.

Language has always been my passion. I have studied Spanish since I was about five years old, and Latin since middle school. I studied in Florence, Italy, for a semester, where I worked as a tour guide at Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral. My coworkers didn't speak English, so I learned Italian very well.

Although I have experience with a wide variety of subjects, my specialty lies in language and writing. I have a very practical understanding of these subjects, and am always eager to share my love of words with students and dispel the sense of mystery a lot of people feel towards language.

Please feel free to contact me to talk about scheduling lessons or ask questions. I'm happy to talk to students and parents, and I hope to hear from you soon!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

As of December of this year, I will hold a BFA from Appalachian State University in painting and drawing. For my major, I took more than twelve studio art classes, all of which required significant drawing and four of which were entirely dedicated to that subject, never receiving a lower grade than A-.
As a tutor, I have worked with students ranging from elementary school to college age, and I am currently working as a teaching assistant in Advanced Painting and Drawing at my university. I can help with basic concerns of observation, composition, line, and shading, or more advanced questions of contemporary context and symbolism.

English

I have been tutoring English for over eight years. I have experience with students ranging in age from five to twenty-one, although most have been in high school. I have a special love for writing and literary analysis, but I am also happy to help with more general reading comprehension, vocabulary, and grammar skills.

Flute

I have played the flute for 12 years. I played in all district band twice during high school and received scholarships from my local music foundation all four years. From my sophomore year onward, I was section leader for my high school flute section, leading sectionals and conducting one-on-one help sessions with younger students. Since high school, my involvement with music has been in playing in pit orchestra for local theater and helping younger students privately. All together, I have about seven years' experience tutoring music.

Italian

I studied in Florence, Italy for a semester in college. While there, I had a job at the cathedral giving tours in Spanish and English. My coworkers didn't speak English, so I learned Italian from them. By the end of the semester I was able to give the tour in Italian!
I'm most qualified to help with beginners or with students wanting to practice conversational Italian. Although I did take a class at my school abroad, most of my experience is with the spoken language and that is where I can be of most help to students.

Latin

I began studying Latin at ten years old, and continued the practice through the college level. I have done translations from Cicero's De Amicitiae, the Vulgate, and even Harry Potter. In high school, I volunteered for the school as a Latin tutor on weekends, helping students who were taking a difficult Latin II class online with grammar and translation.

Because most of my study was in classical Latin (which is the most difficult style), I am qualified to help students with any style or time period they need, and I excel at translating Latin into easy-to-understand plain English, using context and literary comparison to explain how grammatical concepts create readable prose. I am happy to work with any age level and tailor my teaching to the student's needs.

Painting

As of this December, I will have my BFA in painting and drawing from Appalachian State University. I have extensive experience in both acrylic and oil, encompassing an AP portfolio of oil paintings, two workshops in oil, and five college level classes in painting. I have attended Camac Centre d'Art artists' residency in Marnay-sur-Seine, France, for my painting, and have shown my work in Paris, New York, and North Carolina.
My tutoring experience with painting has been with students ranging from elementary school to adulthood, and I am currently working as a teaching assistant for the Advanced Painting and Drawing Class at my university. I am happy to help with basic art principals such as composition and color theory, as well as specific material-related issues or advanced questions of context and interpretation.

Public Speaking

I've been involved in theater since elementary school and held several leading roles in local theatrical productions between 2007 and 2014. My training in this subject has given me significant skill in elocution, and particularly in enunciation, which is a problem that many students deal with when learning public speaking. I also have experience as a tour guide, when I addressed groups ranging from one to thirty or more people about the history of the art in Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral in Florence, Italy. I was successful in giving tours to mixed-age groups, people who were not native English speakers, and even people with hearing disabilities.

I can teach students general elocution (delivery, body language, enunciation), as well as how to identify and address potential challenges in their audiences, which can encompass timbre and cadence, speed, volume, and vocabulary. In the past, I have worked with students ranging in age from elementary school to college level, and I'm happy to tailor my teaching to your specific needs.

Reading

I have a lifelong love of reading that I love to share with students. I've been teaching reading and reading comprehension for about ten years, and it remains one of my favorite subjects. In tutoring, I specialize in using students' existing interests to help them find reading material they enjoy, which can serve as a key to understanding and enjoying other types of reading. I believe that the love of reading is key to the comprehension and enjoyment of all academics, and inspiring this love is my goal for every student.

Spanish

I have studied Spanish from a very young age. I took all available Spanish classes in high school and through the 2000 level in college. When I studied abroad in Florence, I held a job as a tour guide at Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral where part of my job was to give tours and answer questions in Spanish.

Vocabulary

I received a score of 740 in my SAT writing section and 760 in SAT reading. I've never received less than an A on an English language related assignment all the way through college, and during my time as a tutor for Appalachian State University, I often helped students with writing and reading comprehension. Not only do I have school-related experience in language all the way through university, but I have also had articles published on a popular blog and in promotion for a film about Dante Alighieri released in Milan, Italy.

Writing

I received a score of 740 on my SAT writing section. I have never received less than an A on any writing assignment, and have published articles on several online platforms. I have eight years' experience helping students with writing. I can help with grammar and style issues while helping students maintain their own voices.
