I began tutoring in undergrad (Furman - best school in home state, SC; private, liberal arts - full academic scholarship + book stipend) and have since worked in academic community support to develop a solid reputation as a tutor, adviser, and behavioral specialist. With clients of all ages, elementary to adult, I have trailblazed roads to success for an ever growing range of student types and subjects. I usually tutor middle-to-high school math & language skills, specializing in remedial foundations, advanced test preparation techniques, and alternative learning styles. In 1-on-1 settings, my teaching philosophy uses humanistic personality engagement and constant feedback response to create an organic learning environment that continually customizes itself to each student's learning needs.

Homework help/study skills, SAT/ACT, algebra, essays, Hunter High Entrance Exam, Mark Twain and OLSAT-based G&T, GED/TASC, & many other tests are no problem for this seasoned test maker and test master!

BACK TO SCHOOL SPECIAL: SHSAT & ISEE/TACHS PREP -- $90/hr for sessions 1.5 hours or longer. (Yes, you still need private instruction, even if your school provides some SHSAT prep materials!)

***With me you get a tutor who not only tutors with the elite agencies, but also designs curricula & prep materials, and is up to date on the newest changes in the tests (including 2017 SAT & LSAT & yes, NYC's SHSAT as well)***

I am a great communicator with both parents and students. People find my personality charismatic and amicable. I emphasize positive reinforcement and build "horizontal" rapport with students while yet providing honest diagnoses about needs for improvement and obstacles to success. I work with advanced students trying to raise a 'B' to an 'A' as well as those merely struggling to pass, and also those facing obstacles such as ADHD, Autism, etc.

I am available for that one- or two-session bump you need, or for long-term tutoring where I make myself a ready and available resource for clients--always there, just a a call or text away. I am also willing to tutor at unusual hours, such as early morning before an exam. I enjoy meeting new people and building relationships with those I help learn to love learning. I am somewhat new to WyzAnt, but tutoring is my schtick!

Study Skills

In addition to having learned study skills through a decade of post-secondary education, I have experience teaching study skills as a behavioral therapist and as a tutor. I worked for a year and a half as an associate professional doing community support and intensive-in-home therapy in NC, where behavioral goals were set and progress monitored in coordination with parents, teachers, and (in most cases) other health professionals. I bring an approach which empowers students and reinforces their human needs, while relying on time-tested classical methods for motivation and reinforcement. Since leaving the behavioral therapy field and concentrating on private tutoring, study skills have always comprised an element of my tutoring. Clients I've been successful with include those dealing with ADHD and dyslexia.

Social Studies

I hold a "cum laude" undergraduate degree from a Liberal Arts institution (one which requires students to be well-rounded, rather than merely knowing the subject in which they specialize). While I majored in PoliSci and Philosophy (the closest one gets to "social studies" on the university level), I also took courses in Sociology, Psychology, Anthropology, History & Civilization, Law, and etc. Furthermore, I now hold "summa cum laude" graduate degrees in Religious (which includes much history and 'social studies') and Anthropological Studies. I am thoroughly qualified to help "social studies" students, from the elementary all the way up to the university level.

I worked as an Associate Professional doing Community Support and Intensive In Home Therapy for 2 years with 2 different companies, which gave me lots of experience working with ADHD students. Since then, I have often tutored ADHD students privately. Furthermore, I have done extensive college level studies in Abnormal, Developmental, and General Psychology.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD),

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I worked as an Associate Professional doing Community Support and Intensive In Home Therapy for 2 years with 2 different companies, which provided me multiple experiences of working with Autistic Spectrum students and their families. Every Autistic child has unique challenges, strengths, and needs, but I have found great success through basic understanding of the most common patterns and, most importantly, caring patience. My professional experience is boosted by personal contact with parents of Autistic children. Furthermore, I am able to draw upon my extensive academic studies in Abnormal, Developmental, and General Psychology.
Dyslexia,

Dyslexia

I tutored a dyslexic student in South Carolina Math in 2010. We had great success. While I do not have specialized training in dyslexia, this experience combines with my extensive experience with ADD/ADHD and Asbergers/Autism Spectrum to provide me a good feel for working with most dyslexic students. The key is teaching in a way that is flexible and in dialogue about what works best for the student, and attentiveness to stick to what is often an unorthodox method by which dyslexic students accomplish math and reading tasks.

Special Needs

In addition to extensive coursework in psychology at the college level, I have experience as a behavioral therapist and special needs tutor. I worked for nearly two years as an associate professional doing community support and intensive-in-home therapy in NC, where behavioral goals were set and progress monitored in coordination with parents, teachers, and (in most cases) other health professionals. Since then, I've tutored students with a wide range of diagnoses, including many autistic and ADHD students (including current ones), as well as rarer ones such as dyslexia and schizoaffective.

Thorough and knowledgable

Adam took the time to get to know my kids and their study habits. I am hopeful that the understanding and trust that they built will result in greta sessions going forward. We are off to an excellent start. Adam was on time and very professional.

Knowledgeable and friendly tutor

Adam worked with my son on SAT preparation. He introduced a number of test taking techniques, and worked systematically through numerous practice sessions. Adam sent me each lesson's review and was available at a short notice. Great tutor and nice personality!
