Regis College (Accounting)
I developed a real enjoyment for teaching during 14 years of teaching figure skating both one on one and in group lessons to people of all ages. I found a joy in being able to give back what I have learned over the years to my students.
I am currently volunteering at a local school on a daily basis working with children from 2nd grade thru middle school. I work with them in reading and math. It is the most amazing thing to see the face of a child or adolescent light up when they get a concept. I enjoy hearing from the parents that their child has increased their reading speed, learned to read new words or figured out a concept in math.
I have 30 years of experience in the working world in all areas of accounting so I am very familiar with the application of educational concepts into real world situations. I consider it to be a privilege to have the opportunity to teach students.
Math was my strongest subject in Junior High and High School. I was always a year ahead of my peers in my math classes from 7th grade through the end of High School and my career in accounting required the use of math on a regular basis. I have a very strong background in the basics of mathematics and have worked with my own child to build those strong basics.
I have always been a very strong reader with excellent comprehension and it has helped me to teach my own child to read above grade level. I grew up in a family that always used a large and varied vocabulary and have never scaled it back in talking to my own child or the child of others. I enjoy exposing children to new words and giving them the definitions. The larger the vocabulary the stronger the reader they can become.
I consider myself to be a spelling nut. I was always good at spelling and competed in my school spelling bees from 5th grade and up. I love words and I have a need to see them spelled correctly. It is a skill I try to foster in all the children I work with.
I have a degree in Accounting and my CPA. I have worked in the field of accounting for thirty years in all areas. My love of teaching goes well with my knowledge of accounting. I think all students in high school need a basic knowledge of accounting and finance in order to survive in today's world and I want to help as many as possible understand it.
I would love to hear from you if you or your child have a need in any of the areas I can support. I love to work with people of all ages and one on one is the best way I can assist you in reaching your goals. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
