I have 30 years of experience teaching. I've worked with all ages and with students locally in public school and the school for the deaf as well as in a consultant role in urban schools in New York and New Jersey. Reading, written expression and general cognitive skills (learning how to learn!) are my speciality, though much of what I do applies to all content areas. I am a certified teacher/trainer in Feuerstein's Instrumental Enrichment which helps students reduce impulsivity, learn to take in information systematically, make a plan and check their work. I also am trained in the use of Thinking Maps, a visual tool that can be used with students of all ages and all subject matters.
I am an active retiree, with NC teacher certification and can be flexible in arranging tutoring times. I love connecting with students, developing a program that will meet their needs, and seeing their progress!
My undergrad degree is in English. I have an M.A. in Reading Education, as well as over 22 years classroom experience in these areas. Much of my work has been with students who have special needs. I have also taught classes in content area reading and writing at the college level for prospective teachers.
My husband is deaf and I have been signing for 40+ years. I have previous experience as a sign instructor and freelance interpreter.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
