About Mary

I have 30 years of experience teaching. I've worked with all ages and with students locally in public school and the school for the deaf as well as in a consultant role in urban schools in New York and New Jersey. Reading, written expression and general cognitive skills (learning how to learn!) are my speciality, though much of what I do applies to all content areas. I am a certified teacher/trainer in Feuerstein's Instrumental Enrichment which helps students reduce impulsivity, learn to take in information systematically, make a plan and check their work. I also am trained in the use of Thinking Maps, a visual tool that can be used with students of all ages and all subject matters.

I am an active retiree, with NC teacher certification and can be flexible in arranging tutoring times. I love connecting with students, developing a program that will meet their needs, and seeing their progress!

My undergrad degree is in English. I have an M.A. in Reading Education, as well as over 22 years classroom experience in these areas. Much of my work has been with students who have special needs. I have also taught classes in content area reading and writing at the college level for prospective teachers.

My husband is deaf and I have been signing for 40+ years. I have previous experience as a sign instructor and freelance interpreter.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

My reading education MA covers K-13. I mentored teachers in an elementary school in Newark NJ and provided staff development in all subject areas. My cognitive skills background emphasizes generic thinking skills for students of all ages.

Sign Language

I learned to sign in 1968. I taught sign language at both East Burke and Freedom High Schools as well as at Western Piedmont Community College.
I taught deaf students, using sign, for 22 years and continued to work at the school for the deaf for another 8 years full time and 10 years part time as an educational evaluator. I have also worked as a free lance sign interpreter and interpreted in church and educational settings.

Study Skills

I am a certified trainer for Feuerstein's Instrumental Enrichment, an international cognitive skills program, and have taught students this program for over 30 years. The cognitive functions are involve systematically taking in information, developing a hypotheses, making a plan, executing it, checking the work and evaluating the success of the strategies employed.
I have also worked with small groups of students of all ages to help them study for state tests.
I am also certified as a trainer in Thinking Maps, an excellent program of eight visual aids, each based on a discrete cognitive skill.
