About Carol

I am a certified NC teacher with 36 years' experience in special education at all levels. My specialties are working with individuals, of ages 7 through college, having learning differences, including learning disabilities, attention issues, and processing delays. I thoroughly enjoy tutoring. I began tutoring while in college and continued throughout my career. Sometimes the tutoring has been part of my job; sometimes it has been as an extra income. The greatest part of tutoring is when a student makes the connections and becomes successful. When I can impart the joy of learning, the thrill of tutoring is met.
An important part of the work I've done is to lead students to know that there is nothing 'wrong' with them. The student may have a different style or way of working. An effective tutor will assist the student in discovering how to continue to develop and accept and appreciate who he/she is. A goal of mine is to not let a student's potential go by the wayside, but to fulfill his/her strengths.

I am able to put math into understandable terms for a person having math difficulties. Math was not my strongest subject in school until 9th grade. However, I am strong in processing through data. Also, my dad was a math teacher who helped put math in 'regular' terms for me. For example, when a student is strong in language arts yet having math issues, I assist him/her to put the numbers into a problem similar to a reading example. I also encourage students to use manipulatives or to make a graphic representation of the problem.
My second most significant tutoring experience was in Algebra I. A high school student needed to pass the final exam to pass the Algebra class, but he was doing poorly in class. In a three hour session, we worked to connect all that he'd been taught throughout the semester. The urge to tutor more was boosted by this student passing his class. As I have worked in my career, I've helped students to complete the GED and other math tests by giving them confidence in overcoming math problems.

I am an excellent writer. On the GRE, I scored 93% in technical writing. Furthermore, I am able to assist students in getting their thoughts onto paper. Using graphic organizers, I help students get ideas from their heads to paper by focusing on the main idea and details. By showing students how to attend to detail and edit their work, I help them increase the understandability of their work.
Helping a student develop confidence after years of being told they cannot write, can be a daunting task. Giving students usable tips in homonyms, subject/verb agreement, subjective/objective case, and pronouns is a skill I use. Furthermore, I have been an adjunct instructor at the community college level for 8 years with good success with my students. Students offer positive comments when the semester is over for material they have learned.

I hold a bachelor's and master's degree in special education. My career includes over three decades of work with special needs students, including ADD/ADHD needs. An area that is often misunderstood by classroom teachers and by families is the processing and coping differences of ADD and ADHD individuals. Through the years, I've developed methods of dissecting how a person processes and lending insight for the person and his/her family for coping with differences.
I've been complimented in my career by colleagues who recognize my ability to help students cope with academic and behavioral issues. My son dealt with various special needs, and I gained further knowledge by attending teacher and parent workshops in setting up an environment in which ADD/ADHD individuals can become successful. (Of note, many successful CEOs were ADD youngsters.)

Through extensive education and a wide variety of experiences, I have a deep knowledge of successful tutoring techniques. When I can impart a successful tutoring experience and love of learning, I am heartened and pleased by the student's success. My love of tutoring, helping a student know about and accept him/herself, and seeing a happy student spurs me on to wish to tutor more.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Special Needs

I have a Bachelor's Degree and Master's Degree in Special Education, and NC Certification in special education grades K - 12. I have 36 years' professional experience in special education in elementary, middle, and high school, community college, and district administration; can electronically send license and transcript.
