Appalachian State University (Elementary Education)
My love of learning was the seed for my love of teaching. Nothing pleases me more than sharing what I have learned and helping others learn and develop skills to teach themselves to be life-long learners. When I work with a student, my focus is on them and their needs first and foremost. Tutoring is an opportunity for me to help individual students succeed and grow in ways that were not possible for me as a classroom teacher.
I taught science, social studies, health, and literacy from the Common Core at an Elementary School in Charlotte, NC. I have experience tutoring elementary and middle school age students in a variety of subject areas from literacy to mathematics to science, social studies, and music skills. I graduated from Appalachian State University with a degree in Elementary Education with honors. I love working with children and helping them reach those little Ah-ha! moments.
I taught literacy skills (reading, writing, vocabulary, and grammar) at my Elementary School for two fifth grade classes. I have experience tutoring children from kindergarten up to fifth grade in reading and writing skills.
I was trained to teach the Common Core while I attended Appalachian State University. I firmly believe that rigorous, thought-inducing activities that are authentic learning experiences (experiences that connect to the real world) are invaluable, because they allow learners of all ages to connect to the content matter in a more personal way.
I specialized in teaching science at my school and I have the most experience teaching and administering assessments about science. Science is a subject that I have a great deal of passion for.
I look forward to working with you and helping you learn about our world through literacy, mathematics, and science. My love of learning was the seed for my love of teaching. Nothing pleases me more than sharing what I have learned and helping others learn and develop skills to teach themselves to be life-long learners. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I've used the Common Core extensively throughout my lesson planning before and during teaching at Shamrock Gardens. I studied the Common Core in college as an undergraduate student. I used it in my school work and I have taken the Praxis II, which tests both my knowledge of teaching techniques and my understanding of Common Core Subjects.
