About Karyn

I have had a passion for math for as long as I can remember. I have a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and I am now semi-retired. I teach high school math as a substitute for classes from Math 1 to AP Calculus, write math curriculum for an educational website and tutor my son and other students in middle and high school math. Recently, I have been helping students with Pre-Algebra, Algebra I and II, Pre-Calculus, ACT and SAT prep.

Throughout my long career as a Technical Professional, I used mathematical and statistical tools to analyze data and then explain the results to a non-technical audience. I found this part of my career very rewarding and it led me to tutoring.

To me, a tutor needs patience and a toolbox of options to explain/ demonstrate math concepts. Some approaches click with some students and other approaches click with others. My son has high functioning autism and I learned to use a variety of approaches to help him understand math concepts with considerable success. The most conventional approach was rarely the best choice.

For every student that tells me "I hate math," I say, "No you don't, you just haven't been taught in a way that works for you yet." My goal with each student is to find that way. Please contact me if you would like to learn more about my tutoring lessons and/or arrange for lessons with me. I look forward to "doing math with you!"

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I believe that the only way to help students understand how best to approach the ACT math sections is to take them first myself. I have taken 30 different ACT tests in order to provide my students with problem solving tips and strategies to excel. I can offer shortcuts that I found and tips, hints and time savers on problems when the student and I review their answers. I ask students to take the math sections, time them accurately, and practice using the bubble sheets in order for them to have optimized test practice. If there are certain topics that a student struggles with, I review the topic material with them and then assign specific practice problems to enhance their skills in that area. All of my students so far have improved their ACT math scores.

Algebra 1

Algebra 1/Math 1 is the cornerstone of high school math and as such, I am continuously teaching these concepts. Almost all of the 260+ hours that I have tutored in the last three years have been spent with students either in need of a review of some concept from Algebra 1/Math 1 or who actually are taking Algebra 1/Math 1. A strong foundation in Algebra 1/Math 1 is essential to success in Algebra 2/Math 2/Math 3, and higher level math classes as well as higher scores on the ACT and SAT math sections.

Algebra 2

Algebra 2/Math 2/3 is the foundation for the ACT and SAT math exams and as such, I am continuously teaching or reviewing these concepts with students. If a student is currently taking Algebra 2/Math 2/3, I make to sure to emphasize the topics that they will see covered on the entrance exams with extra practice problems and actual entrance exam practice questions. I believe that it is never too early to start college entrance exam math section prep.

Precalculus

I have tutored 5 different pre-Calculus students online for an entire semester who were taking an online course. I also tutored many more students intermittently throughout their online course as well as tutored pre-Calculus students in-person. These students were all very pleased with their final grades.

SAT Math

I am an interim teacher for math, science and engineering classes whenever I am needed at my son's high school. I found that I really enjoy working with teens, teaching them something that I am passionate about. I believe that the only way to help students understand how best to approach the SAT math sections is to take them first myself. I have taken 20 different SAT math sections in order to provide my students with problem solving tips and strategies to excel. I can offer shortcuts that I found and tips, hints and time savers on problems when the student and I review their answers. I ask students to take the math sections, time them accurately, and practice using the bubble sheets in order for them to have optimized test practice. Good Tutor!!

Karyn has helped my son who is 8th Grade become more confident in algebra-1, she is patient and makes sure he understands a concept before moving on. She explains everything with great detail and made sure my son knew what he was doing. I would suggest her to anyone looking for a reliable and over the top helpful tutor.
