I have had a passion for math for as long as I can remember. I have a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and I am now semi-retired. Throughout my long career as a Technical Professional, I used mathematical and statistical tools to analyze data and then explain the results to a non-technical audience. I found this part of my career very rewarding and it led me to tutoring. I have been helping middle and high school as well as college students for the last five years with Pre-Algebra, Algebra I and II, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Calculus, ACT and SAT prep.

With the many variations on how students are being taught during the COVID-19 pandemic, I have found a successful way to help struggling students with partial or entirely online Math classes. I will take any part or all of a class with them via multimedia so that I can answer their questions on class material and homework in real time. Doing this has been very beneficial to students who learn best by asking questions and talking through the steps to solve problems with individualized help. I have changed my fee to a tiered structure to lower the cost of potential multiple meetings with a student per week up to four sessions. Please contact me about my tiered fees.

To me, a tutor needs patience and a toolbox of options to explain/ demonstrate math concepts. For every student that tells me "I hate math," I say, "No you don't, you just haven't been taught in a way that works for you yet." My goal with each student is to find that way. Please contact me if you would like to learn more about my tutoring lessons and/or arrange for lessons with me. I look forward to "doing math with you!"

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Algebra 1/Math 1 is the cornerstone of high school math and as such, I am continuously teaching these concepts. Many of the 720+ hours that I have tutored with Wyzant in the last five years have been spent with students either in need of a review of some concept from Algebra 1/Math 1 or who actually are taking Algebra 1/Math 1. A strong foundation in Algebra 1/Math 1 is essential to success in Algebra 2/Math 2/Math 3, and higher level math classes as well as higher scores on the ACT and SAT math sections.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

Algebra 2/Math 2/3 is the foundation for the ACT and SAT math exams and as such, I am continuously teaching or reviewing these concepts with students. If a student is currently taking Algebra 2/Math 2/3, as we study concepts the student finds difficult, I make to sure to show a student how these concepts may be covered on college entrance exams such as the SAT and ACT. Then practice, practice, practice. I believe that it is never too early to start college entrance exam math section prep.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

Prealgebra is the foundation of all the math that is to come in High School so building a strong skill set is so important. I have spent hundreds of hours tutoring prealgebra; students and parents consistently give me a 5 star rating. In addition, I love doing math and truly enjoy working with middle and high school students.
Precalculus,

Precalculus

I have tutored pre-Calculus students both online and in-person for the last five years. I really enjoy the challenges that different pre-calculus courses offer students and I want my students to feel good about taking on this higher level high school or college level math. Improved student self-confidence is always my goal and I find that success breeds success for these higher level math students. All of my students have been pleased with their final grades.
SAT Math

SAT Math

I am an interim teacher for math, science and engineering classes whenever I am needed at my son's high school. I found that I really enjoy working with teens, teaching them something that I am passionate about. I believe that the only way to help students understand how best to approach the SAT math sections is to take them first myself. I have taken 20 different SAT math sections in order to provide my students with problem solving tips and strategies to excel. I can offer shortcuts that I found and tips, hints and time savers on problems when the student and I review their answers. I ask students to take the math sections, time them accurately, and practice using the bubble sheets in order for them to have optimized test practice. If there are certain topics that a student struggles with, I review the topic material with them and then assign specific practice problems to enhance their skills in that area. All of my students so far have improved their SAT math scores.

Outstanding Algebra tutor

Karyn was amazing with my son’s first tutoring session. She used some of his current Algebra problems as material, and he really seemed more confident about doing the equations himself after the season. I highly recommend using Karyn. She is professional yet makes this subject fun (which can be tricky I’m sure!). Have already scheduled our next session!!

Reliable , knowledgeable and patient!

My son who has special needs was failing math last quarter! Now he is doing much better. She gets him and understands how he learns. That is half the battle. My Daughter just started and I have high hopes.
