University of Phoenix (Education)
I have been a teacher for 10 years. I am an intermediate teacher (grades 4-6). I have worked with many types of learners and understand the developmental process needed to enhance learning.
I love being in a classroom but nothing is more rewarding than giving a student my individual time to help them grow. Tutoring allows me to help a student one on one and really get to know their level of thinking. Once I have an understanding of how the student learns, I adjust my teaching to fill in the missing pieces they are struggling with in a subject area. Not only do I teach the needed skill to succeed, I also focus on the confidence that finding a weakness is really a strength because then the student can ask for help. Asking for help is the first step on the road to success.
I taught in a school that piloted Common Core; therefore, I have used it for more years than the state required. Common Core does not need to be an intimidating process if one understands the purpose of its use. I have experience using the curriculum and understand the stages to develop cognitive reasoning.
I have taught upper elementary student using real life examples to help students grasp the understanding that what is being taught is around us every day. Often students do not realize they already know the answer but need reassurance that they understand the process of how to get to their answer. I help students work in an organized method to help eliminate making mistakes, while helping them understand the base skills needed for each subject.
With both our dedication to learning, we can overcome obstacles through focusing on the task at hand. I can not make you focus; however, I can help you build the necessary tools to use to strengthen your understanding of a subject area. If you put in the work, you will see the rewards. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
