Midwestern State University (English)
University of North Carolina at Charlotte (Enrolled)
Greetings to all potential students and parents of students! I have over ten years of experience assisting students of various ages (from elementary school through graduate school) with difficulties in reading and writing comprehension. My personal educational background is as follows: In 2004, I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Midwestern State University in North Texas. While my undergraduate educational focus was mainly on the writing and critical study of literature, when I enrolled in graduate school to pursue a Master's degree in English I began studying the process of composition for academic writing (including the rules of grammar and mechanics) and the teaching of writing composition in a classroom setting.
While enrolled in graduate school, during my first year, I worked as a graduate assistant in our university's Reading and Writing Lab. There I assisted many students of various backgrounds by tutoring them and reviewing their essays. Following that first year, I became a graduate teaching assistant responsible for instructing two classes of freshmen composition each semester. Having been educated on the process of teaching reading and writing comprehension as a graduate student and having minored in philosophy as an undergraduate student I learned many skills that I continue to use in developing my personal teaching style. I taught freshmen English for three years before moving to North Carolina. I am currently enrolled as a graduate student at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte, where I am continuing my educational path towards a career in teaching at the community college level. However, my personal experience as a tutor includes working with children as young as those at the fourth grade level through high school and beyond. I am currently involved as an active volunteer tutor with the Cabarrus Literacy Council, where I meet with and assist adults who have various reading and writing difficulties.
I have a great working knowledge of how to write different kinds of essays (from personal to professional) and researched papers, including how to format those researched papers. I also specialize in teaching an understanding of grammar and mechanics and sentence/paragraph structure. I offer editing and proofreading of papers along with my tutoring services. My methods of tutoring include assessing the learning abilities and knowledge of my students so that I may cater to each person's individual needs, as necessary. For me, the learning experience is exceedingly successful when there is a mutual relationship where both the tutor and student are given the opportunity to grow and adjust through straightforward communication. I look forward to working with you!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
