About Martha

As a student of American Sign Language myself for the last 25 years, I am excited to help those who would like to begin this journey. Regardless of the reason you desire to learn, ASL is, in my opinion, the most useful language you will ever hope to learn. It has and continues to stretch me in new ways.

The best part of learning ASL is the amazing friendships you will develop with some amazing people. Deaf and Hard of Hearing people are all around us. They have more to offer to us than we will ever offer to them. As an interpreter myself, I am excited to help you have the opportunity to know this fascinating culture and people.

I have had the opportunity to be an interpreter for over twenty years. These years have been quite varied as far as experience. From school settings to employee training, I have been able to learn first hand from the best teachers of ASL, the Deaf themselves. While I have an Associate of Arts degree in sign language, I have returned to school in order to earn my Bachelor of Science degree. ASL, like other languages, is continually evolving, so learning never stops. My goal is to teach the basics of the language then give you the opportunity to learn more from the Deaf in your area.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Sign Language

I began learning sign language 26 years ago. I have worked as an interpreter in educational, religious, medical, and employee/employer settings. In 1994 I graduated from Tennessee Temple University with an AA in Sign Language. I am currently enrolled at Piedmont International University in hopes of earning my BS in American Sign Language. Currently, I not only take classes in sign language, but I also work with the school system in Union County as a substitute interpreter.
