My Vision:
Today, we live in a society that is rapidly loosing the ability to think creatively and critically. My tutoring focuses on teaching children how to think critically and creatively with each subject I teach. One of the best gifts, I can pass on to the next generation is to model, train, and teach children how to think creatively and critically not only academics, but also in life.

My approach to learning:
Each lesson I tutor your child in is tailored made to your child's learning style. Each lesson is documented with content taught, tutor feedback, suggestions, and homework focus for the week. Each customized learning plan is specifically taught to your child. I measure prior learning through a pre-assessment test and assess learning progress through various benchmark exam to make sure the agreed upon learning goals have been met.

My background:
I graduated from the College of Charleston with both a Artium Baccalaureus in Classical Studies and a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in 2005. I also earned a minor in English. I taught for three years in the Charleston County School District prior to relocating to the Charlotte area. I left the classroom learning environment to home educate my four children. I have two years of tutoring experience working with a North Carolina based tutoring company. I am now embarking on my own to share my love of learning with others.

In mathematics, I use a spiraling skills based approach with a mix of real world application when possible. For Writing, I used the Institute for Excellence in Writing approach. (I am currently working on my certification.) For science and history, I use a blend of project / inquiry based learning with reading integration. In reading, I use the 4 block method of reading combined with quality literature to build students fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary skills.

Wonderful with my 9 year old and 12 year old!

Lisa is positive, organized and prepared. I have two sons who are very different personalities, both very bright, and both have ADHD (2e). My 9 year old son has been working with her on Latin, Writing and Grammar two or three times a week. None of them are his favorite subjects, but he's learned much, and has been very positive about his time with Ms. Lisa (which is not to be taken for granted). More recently, she's also been working with my 12 year old on Latin. Her positivity and sense of humor have really helped lighten the mood when we've hit bumps in the road. She's also been a great resource for me as a parent. She's been a perfect match to support our family's classical-leaning homeschooling approach. She really makes an effort to empathize with and understand the unique challenges of all kinds of different students.

Lisa has been great to work with my homeschooler who has struggled some with Latin and has difficulty getting assignments completed and in on time.
