About Myra

My name is Myra and I am here to help! I have the patience and time to ensure that you not only understand the work, but also have fun doing it.
I find that one-on-one tutoring works the best. I do assign homework and give tests. I firmly believe in having a flexible structure so that students know what to expect, oftentimes a "getting started" activity is used to transition into the tutoring session. I break the session into several shorter segments of various activities, i.e., 10 minutes of oral reading or discussion, 5 minutes for a game or other fun activity, 10 minutes for writing, math drill, etc. The length and content of these segments will depend on the attention span and needs of each student. I find that students will get less restless if they know in advance when the session will begin and end, so I always use a timer. Knowing that students take in information through different learning channels (visual, auditory and kinesthetic), and that one or two of these may dominate in any student, I use special, colored markers and objects to facilitate learning. Sometimes putting things in different colors, using manipulative objects or even physical movement to represent concepts can be very helpful. I also recommend tape recorders to help students who have trouble deciding and remembering what they want to write about. If your student is a reluctant reader, I have found it useful to offer to take turns reading every other sentence in the paragraph. This eases the pressure on the student and gives the student a chance to hear and see accurate reading skills. This is especially helpful for a reading comprehension assignment as it gives the student more time to absorb the material. I give positive praise. I do not do the students' work for them. I do allow for failure and learning to take place. My goal is independent learning. I also will ask the students how they think they did or evaluate their own response as well as relating what they are learning to their own life experiences. I will keep my commitment and I expect you to keep your commitment.

I look forward to helping you and your student find the greatness that lies within all of us.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
