East Carolina University (Psychology)
I have had the privilege of working as a Special Education Teacher for over 10 years in both English and Math classes. My training includes post-undergraduate study at UNC-G as well as professional development training in reading, writing, and math across grade levels. My teaching certification allows me to go into the classroom and help students who may have difficulty learning certain subject matters such as reading and math, or who have behaviors that keep them from learning. I enjoy what I do because I have the opportunity to take what the other teacher gives the students and give it back to them in a way that they understand.
Because my teaching certification is in the area of special education, I have the privilege of working with all students. Most of the time, the students I work with have some basic understanding of concepts but they struggle with independent tasks, such as homework completion and test-taking. That is why I enjoy tutoring so much. Right now I have over 5 clients I work with outside of school, from the elementary to high school level, on a regular basis to help them become stronger students. These young people are making weekly progress and their parents speak about how their learning has changed at school and at home. I want to provide this type of support to other families in the community.
I am certified Middle Grades math (6th-9th) with experience in elementary, middle, and high school math subjects (Pre-Algebra, Algebra (Math 1), Geometry, Algebra 2 (Math 2).
Please feel free to contact me if you or someone you know is looking for additional support. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a certified special educator with experience working with students who have been identified with ADD/ADHD. I also have a degree in Psychology where we learned about different behaviors and the impact they have on learning. I understand that students who have this diagnosis require specialized support, such as help with chunking information and development of organizational skills.
I am a certified teacher with current work experience in high school math courses.
I am licensed K-12 General Curriculum with a special emphasis in middle grades math.
I have previous training in various reading programs to help students increase their reading skills.
