About Sharon

I am certified/licensed as a NC Special Educator, and I've worked for the public school system since 2011 as a substitute teacher and elementary school tutor. My home is in Matthews, NC, but I border the Charlotte city limits near Providence & McKee roads. I have teenage triplets who are in high school. One child is cognitively disabled, on the autism spectrum, has ADHD, and is educated in a self-contained classroom. The other two are in general education classrooms, but one has ADD. I have worked with elementary aged students in small group instructional settings for improved language literacy development, reading comprehension & fluency, guided reading, math, hand-writing, spatial awareness, and focus. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have worked with students who couldn't sit in their desks without falling out, who were distracted by the least sound, and who couldn't seem to remember something five minutes after they were told. My own son has ADHD, and one of my daughters has a moderate degree of ADD. I have had to adjust daily living tasks to accommodate for their deficits. Primarily, I will give frequent reminders, and will limit my instructions to 2-3 steps. To account for my son's "HD", he needs large muscle activities, limited time on tasks, breaks/walks, verbal and non-verbal cuing when he is exhibiting "outdoor" actions.

Autism

I hold a B.S. degree in Psychology from High Point University, and a NC General Special Education K-12 teaching license. I also have a 15 year old son who has multiple disabilities, including cognitive, and who receives his education in a self-contained autism classroom. He attended an Early Childhood Intervention school when he was two years old, and I have witnessed him transition from Developmentally Delayed, to Intellectually Disabled, and now to Autistic for Educational Purposes. I am also a substitute teacher, and in addition to receiving exceptional children's training in college, I have also substituted in EC classes, and participate in the Special Olympics.

Elementary (K-6th)

During the course of my field work assignments while in college, I was assigned, for two separate classes, to a typically developing second grade classroom. Over the past five years, I have gone into every grade level as a substitute teacher, EC resource substitute, and as a tutor. I also have 15 year old triplets, so I have had first hand experience over the years with their school assignments.

Phonics

I studied Language Literacy Development in college, and received further training in phonics using the Wilson Reading System, a structured literacy program based on phonological-coding research and Orton-Gillingham principles. It was used in small groups with 4th/5th grade students with word-level deficits who were not making sufficient progress. These students required multisensory language instruction, and more structured literacy lessons.

Reading

While earning my NC Special Education teaching license at Greensboro College, one of my favorite classes was Language Arts Through Children's Literature. I also spent five months student teaching using the Wilson Reading System, and working with pull-out groups for guided reading instruction. My most recent tutoring experience was tutoring reading and comprehension to 3rd graders in a public school setting.
