Mr. Hanns was very supportive in helping me understand some of the terms in statistics. He provided me with several ways on how to learn and understand the material as well as some of the important elements of statistics. He suggested certain books that will help me better understand the terms used in the text. He is very punctual, trustworthy, easy to work with, and responds to his emails promptly. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Algebra as the technique to manipulate formulas and solving for an unknown is the bread and butter of a mathematician. Generalization of the arithmetic operations (plus, minus, times, division, power, root) leads to the study of groups, rings, ideals, fields, and the relationships between them, which all has been part of my education.
Linear Algebra is a gateway course to higher math. Its concepts and techniques, for example vector spaces, linear independence, orthogonality, matrix algebra, linear equations are used widely in other disciplines and essential to their mastering. I have taken two classes of linear algebra at the beginning of my studies and later accompanied another class as student tutor.
I have used Excel for more then 20 years and have been using it on a daily basis during the last ten. Among the features that I have used extensively:
(1) database-like spreadsheets with links thru V or HLOOKUP
(2) data analysis thru sorting, filtering and pivot tables
(3) charts for use in other documents (e.g. MS Word)
(4) statistical and mathematical functions
(5) VBA programming for automation and custom solutions
I have used and created many PowerPoint presentations in my previous job in the financial industry and my current teaching position.
Precalculus deals with various mathematical concepts (e.g. rational, trigonometric, logarithmic and exponential functions, domains of numbers, etc.) without using the methods of calculus. I am intimately familiar with these concepts as they reappear in many other disciplines (e.g. calculus, complex analysis) that I have studied as part of my masters degree.
I have been teaching statistics classes at UNCW and other colleges.
Trigonometry opens up problems of geometry to numerical solutions and has its roots in antiquity. Applications include planar and spherical geometry, geodesy, astronomy.
The trigonometric functions (sine, cosine etc) have many interesting properties that make them a rich field of study. Their central property is periodicity, which makes them indispensable when studying periodic movements. Complex analysis ties them back to the exponential function via Euler's identity.
No higher mathematical education is complete without trigonometry. I have studied it intensely throughout mine.
