About Jeffrey

I grew up on a farm in La Grange, NC. I am married to Sandra with two children, Bradley, Kimberly, her husband Ivan. We have a lazy kitty by the name of Keebler. After being away from La Grange for 33 years, I moved back to the farm in June of 2015. A huge highlight in my life was teaching high school English in Hawaii for 2 years. This was a stretching experience where I learned much about myself and people from other cultures.

After earning BA and Masters degrees in religious studies, I earned an EdD in Elementary Curriculum and Instruction 1990. In 2010 I received grades 6 to 12 English Language Arts teacher certification. My classroom teaching experience includes grade 4 math and science, high school English, elementary to high school substitute teaching, high school principal, and college level elementary methods courses. I have also tutored students in every place where I have taught. I have taught in South Carolina, Hawaii, and North Carolina. Presently I teach grade 4 math and science at Wayne Preparatory Academy where I am also the grade 4 lead teacher.

The following areas qualify me as an elementary or high school tutor: I hold teacher certification in grades 6 to 12 English Language Arts; Presently as a grade 4 math/science teacher, I teach both higher and lower sections where I use "Direct Instruction;" I strive to develop both subject matter content knowledge and thinking skills; I try to make learning enjoyable for my students by utilizing "hands-on" objects, using humor, and being real; And as much as possible, I incorporate computer-based games and activities into my teaching.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

As a high school principal for several years, I served as guidance counselor for all graduating seniors; and I tutored them in preparing for the ACT English test. In addition, I have taken training courses from ACT for this test. Finally, I have thoroughly studied the official study guide and use it as the main content for tutoring students.

ACT Reading

I tutored several years of graduating seniors in the ACT Reading Test. Moreover, I have completed multiple training sessions for this test, and I know the test content and question types in great detail. My English Language Arts certification along with my knowledge of the test and previous experience makes me a viable tutor.

I have trained many elementary teachers in multiple states in handwriting instruction as a former curriculum trainer for a large textbook publisher. When I tutor students in handwriting, I stress pencil hold, paper position, legibility, and neatness. Also, I attempt to minimize letter reversals for students by teaching one-stroke letter formation for letters such as "b," "d," "p," and "q." Finally, I hold a grade 6 to 12 English Language Arts teacher certification.

Phonics

I base my phonics tutoring upon a decoding method using word families such as "at," "eep," and "ug." These word families are very predictable for determining short vowel sounds, long vowel sound, and special vowel sounds. In addition, I taught a reading methods class to elementary education majors for three years. These qualifications coupled with a grade 6 to 12 English Language Arts Certification, I believe I offer a solid tutoring opportunity.

Proofreading

Proofreading is a significant step in the process of clearly and correctly communicating one's written or oral message. I teach proofreading as a step in the writing process of pre-writing, writing, editing, proofreading, and publishing. Two methods of proofreading which I teach include initially compose a draft in a word processor and spell check by reading the last word of the essay to the first word of the essay. Lastly, I teach my students that it is the responsibility of the writer to clearly and correctly communicate his/her message so that the reader can understand that message.

Reading

I have tutored many students over the years in reading. Among the 30+ hours of language arts related coursework I have taken are Teaching Reading in the Elementary School and Teaching Reading in the Secondary School. Writing

I utilize the five basic sentence patterns (for example: subject + intransitive verb, subject + transitive verb + direct object) to model to students how to build sentences.
