I graduated from UNCW class of 2004 with a B.S. degree in Mathematics and Statistics. I've been tutoring math for more than ten years and I am currently a math instructor at a community college going into my 6th year. As a youth minister at a church in Durham, NC, I have volunteered to tutor many young and older church members as well as people from in the community. I teach and tutor basic math, Algebra, Trigonometry, prealgebra, and others.
Along with tutoring math, I also explain and teach students how to effectively take notes, take test, manage their time doing homework, creating a positive learning or studying atmosphere and many study skills that will improve their knowledge in math. I also make sure they understand the difference between "understanding math material and knowing math material". I feel there is much more students should learn and understand when it comes to education than just showing a student how to do a bunch of math problems. Knowledge these skills such as note taking, test taking, communication with teachers, and understanding how students learn best can effectively improve a students success rate. Hello,

Michael is very proficient at tutoring. When I first read his profile, I was leery of whether he would be able to tutor on an elementary level since he teaches at a community college. However, after the first two sessions, I was pleasantly surprised with Michael's ability to breakdown mathematical concepts in a way easily understood by my 10 year old daughter. He takes his time in explaining the steps needed to resolve problems and have her repeatedly go through the steps until she knows how to do it on her own. Michael quickly recognized areas that my daughter struggles in and provided solutions that would help make problem solving easier. Michael uses different tools during his tutoring sessions, such as his laptop, to help make learning fun and interesting. He also provides me with a summary of each session and gives me ideas to work with her at home. He is always on time and is very respectful. My daughter is more confident in her ability to do math and her teacher has seen some improvements as well. I would definitely recommend Michael to anyone I know needing a tutor.
Michael is very patient and thorough when it comes to tutoring. I am very pleased with the service he is providing my daughter. Her grades in Math are improving with his guidance. I recommend him to anyone who has a child struggling in math.
Very patient with my child. Listens to and makes sure my child has an understanding of what she is learning.
Michael is a very patient and excellent tutor. He has a unique way to make you learn the subject with a clear foundation. He listens and points out where exactly your weaknesses are in Math. Teachers
in the classroom don't have the time to help students understand certain concepts that take time to understand. That's why Michael takes his time to understand how his students learn, and then he starts to teach and explain problems with a step by step approach according to his or her learning method.
I appreaciate Michael's persistant devotion to my child. His knowledge of math and ability to connect with my son to ensure that he gets the best grade possible is commendable. Thanks so much, Michael.
Michael is an excellent tutor and I am beginning to understand more about Algebra I, thanks to Michael.
I highly recommend Michael for other students who need extra support in Algebra.
Mr. H. is a great teacher. We were looking for someone who was familiar with the math applications taught in the new core curriculum math course taught in WCPSS. Mr. H. was the answer to our prayers. He offered an assessment of where my son was in terms of understanding the information and made suggestions for his improvement. After each session I receive input on what my son needs to do for the week. We have had five math tutors over the years but none have offered this level of service.
Michael is very nice and respectful. He listen to my concerns and needs for my son that he tutor. His patience and friendly attitude makes all the difference.
Michael is a great tutor! I would recommend him to anyone. He is patient, thorough, and applies simple learning principles that makes learning the subject easy to understand.
Micheal is a great tutor. He has very patient with me. He explains problems in a way that I understand. Our time is extremely well spent. He makes me feel like I "actually" can do MATH.
Since Michael has been tutoring my daughter, I have seen such a wonderful change in her attitude toward Pre-Cal. While her classmates are distressed with the rapid changes in concepts, she continues to expound on the foundation Michael has helped her build. Instead of teaching her how to answer a single equation, he gives her the tools to understand and work through multiple concepts.
Thank you! I'm happy to hear that she is doing well and looking at Pre-Cal in a positive way.
Michael is patient and knowledgeable. My child's understanding of the subject matter (college algebra) is improving as well as her confidence.
Thank You! I'm glad she is doing well!
We have been so happy with Michael for tutoring our daughter. He is providing her tips and breaking down problems to help her understand them better. Taking his time to make sure she fully understands the process of solving problems and can do the work in the time allowed without getting frustrated and overwhelmed. I would recommend him to anyone needing help.
Michael worked with my son on a level that he could get a better understanding of geometry. Not only did he communicate math skills but life applications as well. My son has been diagnosed with ADD and Mr. Hanson also shared strategies to help my son stay focus. I am very pleased.
Michael is a very patient and professional tutor. He works with my daughter's school curriculum and has her well prepared for classroom activities and tests. He also is very flexible to accommodate our schedule. My daughter is excited about Math again!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
From 2000 to 2005 I worked full time for Family Focus LLC in Wilmington, NC while attending UNCW. Family Focus provides homes for mentally and behavioral challenged children. When these children come home from school I've helped them with their homework, conduct activities, took them on field trips...etc. I made it a priority to provide children with ADD/ADHD many of engaging activities or hands on work by teaching, coaching or instruction to help them learn and understand their school work.
I have played intramural basketball at UNCW for 3 years (2001-2004). I am currently on two basketball teams one men's and the other Co-Ed. Men's league is hosted by Raleigh Parks and Recreation Department and the Co-Ed league is hosted by Premier Co-Ed Sports.
I have been playing chess for about 15 years. I can provide email addresses of references if needed. To keep up my skills I play online on yahoo games.
I have taken and passed a course of differential equations at UNCW. I have studied theory, methods of solutions, and applications of ordinary differential equations with emphasis on first order equations and linear equations.
I have taken a discrete math course at UNCW and passed. In this course I have studied graph theory, matrix operations and applications; linear programming, series and sequences and calculator-based programming.
I have tutored young children ages 5-10 for about 5 years. Mostly children that has been having problems with math. I have tutored children from my church, through my job and in the community. I always like to set a positive and energetic atmosphere to keep students wanting to learn more.
I have played intramural football for 4 years at UNCW (2001-2005). I have been playing flag football for about 5 years after that for RDU flag football and Premier Co-Ed Sports. Some of my stats can be found from the RDU website under team Lockdown (Mike Hanson).
I have taken and passed a Linear Algebra course at UNCW while achieving by B.S in Mathematics and Statistics. I have also tutored many students in this course while working at Bear Hall in the Math Lab at UNCW.
My father is a cerfited martial arts instructor. He has 40+ years experience. I've learned from him for about 10+ years. I have taught self-defense classes, proper kicking and punching techniques, how to get free from numerous holds..etc. (For example: headlocks, arm holds, bear hugs, etc.) I can provide my diplomas after each test I have passed and I can provide a website of the martial school I attended.
Some of my main topics I like to touch on when tutoring students are learning styles, anxiety, managing your time, note taking, test taking skills, and general study strategies. If a student is weak in any of these areas, I will work with the student to make each topic stronger. In addition, a student maybe strong in one of these areas therefore I can provide tips to continue to enhance or sharpen their strong points.
