About John

I have been an active tutor with WyzAnt since 2009. I attended a public high school in the state of Connecticut and graduated in the top 18% of my class with honors. After high school, I studied engineering at the University of Southern California and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree. I have a strong interest and background in mathematics and have tutored students of all ages in Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1 & 2, Geometry and Trigonometry for the past 14 years, including settings geared toward preparing young students for PSAT and SAT exam testing. I have primarily tutored one-on-one with students. However, I have 4 years of substitute teaching and adult education teaching experience, as well as experience with group tutoring, including as many as 12 math students in a given setting.

Most recently, I have passed the middle school Praxis mathematics exam in the state of South Carolina and am continuing with various tutoring and student teaching assignments while I complete the necessary tasks for a professional teaching certification/license in that state. I have also completed a Master of Science degree (2011-2013) from the University of Phoenix with a concentration in accounting/forensic accounting and recently sat for the Praxis business and marketing education exam in South Carolina. In addition, I am a 15-year member of the United States Chess Federation, currently holding a professional rating and a Local Tournament Director designation. I enjoy teaching and tutoring new players of all ages in opening theory, principles, rules of the game, strategy and tactics. As with mathematics, I am available for one-on-one or group tutoring sessions.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have assisted several students who have improved their ACT English scores with help from the tutoring lessons that I've conducted.

Whether the student requires help with study habits, time management, spotting key information and main ideas within written passages, clarification when comparing 2 or more definitions or themes, or a host of other concerns, I can advise and help correct any issues that the student is dealing with.

ACT Math

I have successfully tutored several students in multiple educational disciplines and areas of the ACT exam, to help them better prepare for the actual test. I have been working with students concerning ACT exam preparation for the past 5 years.

Algebra 1

I have been tutoring Algebra I students for the better part of the last 8 years. I am currently tutoring high school students in Algebra and Geometry. I provide my students with techniques and problem-solving strategies to help make the work easier to comprehend and perform.

Algebra 2

I've been tutoring students in Algebra II for the past 8 years. I am flexible with scheduling for my current students and will offer the same courtesy to you as well, should you decide you need my assistance with math tutoring.

ASVAB

I am currently tutoring an ASVAB test-taker, specifically in the subject areas that best prepare for arithmetic reasoning, logic, and knowledge, in general science, as well as in English paragraph comprehension and vocabulary. I am focusing on getting my current student to understand the relationship between what is being asked of her in several of the practice word problems we've been working on in the mathematics sections of her practice book and how to translate the words into mathematical operations and formulas for purposes of problem solving. I have been successful with this approach with many of my former tutoring students, many of which have passed the exam after completing tutoring lessons with me, including 2 more students in 2015. I have high hopes for my current student, who will be taking the ASVAB exam in March, 2016.

Chess

I have been an active member of the United States Chess Federation since 2001. I have competed in several professional tournaments in the United States and currently hold a national Class B (strong tournament player) rating with the USCF. I have finished in the Top-5 and Top-10 in several class tournaments and have had 2 instructive chess games from my personal tournament experience published in 'Chess Life' magazine in 2002 and 2003 with full commentary from Grandmaster Lev Alburt.

I have personal experience with tutoring beginner and intermediate-level chess players and am currently looking for new students. I help players improve their opening knowledge and theory, middle-game techniques, puzzle solving, tactics and end-game strategies. I am available for one-on-one or group tutoring.

Economics

Much of the economics tutoring and studying I've done between 2011 - 2014 has included a mix of both macro & micro-economic principles and applications. I've worked closely with the online platforms used at the University of Phoenix, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG), and others.

Elementary Math

I have 10 years of tutoring experience working with math students. I am patient and willing to work with all students who need help with challenging math coursework.

Financial Accounting

I have a Master's degree in Accounting from the University of Phoenix. I can assist with research, writing, and with use of Microsoft programs such as Outlook, Access, Excel, and PowerPoint.

GED

I have taught, instructed, and tutored GED students one-on-one and in small group settings, since the beginning of 2003. Most students would agree that I'm patient, responsible, and instructive with my lessons. I cover strategies and time-saving techniques to help students improve on their learning, understanding, and problem-solving abilities.

General Computer

I have been using computers for various employment and personal responsibilities for several years. I've also been active with social media and networking sites such as LinkedIn, Twitter, facebook, and others for more than 6 years.

Geometry

I have 8 years of experience working with geometry students. I have tutored students in general high school coursework as well as for standardized tests such as the EOC, SAT, PSAT, and others.

GMAT

I have successfully assisted many graduate-level students with standardized test preparation, including the 4 sections (Analytical Writing, Quantitative, Integrated Reasoning, and Verbal) of the GMAT. I provide the tips and logical approaches to current students for study/preparation that have produced improvements in test scores for many of the students in similar career paths, in recent years.

GRE

I am an active tutor and current graduate student at University of Phoenix. I scored 100% on WyzAnt's GRE tutoring exam and am available to assist students with GRE exam study and preparation.

Managerial Accounting

I have a Master's degree in Accounting from the University of Phoenix. I can assist with research, writing, and with use of Microsoft programs such as Outlook, Access, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Microsoft Excel

I've been using Microsoft Excel software for over 20 years.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I have been active with the Microsoft Suite package (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.) for more than 2 decades. I have worked closely with several students and professionals to better explain the various functions, tools, resources, and how to better present information in spreadsheets and other available presentations.

Prealgebra

I have 9 years of experience working with algebra and pre-algebra students. I've worked with many students for general school coursework, as well as for standardized test preparation.

I cover problem-solving strategies, techniques, and time-saving methods to further assist my students and to help maximize their grades and test-taking potential.

SAT Math

I have successfully worked with several students preparing for the SAT and other standardized exams over the past 12 years. My main focus has been on the mathematics' sections, but I've also assisted many of these students in other challenging academic areas that are included within the exam.
