About Phil

In addition to earning degrees in music from San Francisco State University (B.M.) and The University of North Texas (M.M.) I have completed the teacher education program at Old Dominion University. I continue to engage in a diverse career as a professional tubist. This experience consists of extensive freelance work such as orchestral playing, chamber music occasions and commercial entertainment. More permanent positions include my service in The United States Continental Army Band, Ft. Monroe, VA, and the 380th Army Reserve Band, Richmond, VA and as a musician at Busch Gardens during the 2011 and 2012 seasons. In addition to time spent in fine ensembles such as the Virginia Wind Symphony, University of North Texas Wind Symphony and the University of North Texas Symphony Orchestra, I have had the great fortune of time spent as a marching member of the World Champion Santa Clara Vanguard Drum and Bugle Corps.

While pursuing a master’s degree in tuba performance I was active as a private lesson teacher at the middle and high school levels. I continue to teach students privately. Experience in teaching adults includes work as a private ear-training and sight-singing tutor at the collegiate level. I am also a certified K-12 Instrumental Music Teacher.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Ear Training

M.M. Tuba, University of North Texas
B.M. Tuba, San Francisco State University
K -12 Music Education License

I excelled in ear-training and sight-singing both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. In both settings, I worked as a private tutor in ear-training, sight-singing, and rhythmic and melodic dictation. The music-majors I tutored showed great progress and successfully passed their courses in ear-training.

French Horn

I have taught several French Horn students who have shown significant improvement on their instrument. I possess an understanding of the function and playing of both the cylindrical brass instruments (trumpet, trombone) and the conical brasses (French Horn, Euphonium and tuba.) This understanding helps me to differentiate instruction for each of the brass instruments including French Horn.

General Music

I am familiar with best practices in teaching general music classes. I have experience with, Orf instruments, recorders, rhythm Instruments, movement, music theory and music history.

Music History

I have the following credentials: M.M. Tuba, University of North Texas; B.M. Tuba, San Francisco State University; and a K -12 Music Education License.

In addition to study of music history at the undergraduate and graduate levels, I have taught music history at the middle school level. As a band teacher, my students were routinely engaged in listening to music in a variety of styles and from a range of historical periods from Renaissance to 20th Century and popular styles from 1900 to present. Students were engaged in discussion of composers and their works including association with their cultural and historical context.

Music Theory

M.M. Tuba, University of North Texas
B.M. Tuba, San Francisco State University

I have studied music theory at the undergraduate and graduate levels. I utilize and apply music theory knowledge on several levels including: study and performance of literature in various styles, instruction of music students, and for research and scholarly pursuits.
