About Jerald

I have taught as an adjunct at a local community college since 2012. Adobe software and related graphic art courses became my teaching expertise. With such a wide range of students and ages in my classes, I feel I can teach any age or knowledge level. It is my personal desire to teach one on one, to hone in on special questions or difficulties with a subject or software function. With a larger classroom setting, it is not always possible to slow down to cover these special needs.

Running concurrent to my teaching, I have been an active freelance artist in the graphic art and illustration field. Serving my clients with over 45 years of experience, I can lead a client (or student) from the beginning conceptual thinking of a project through to the competed product or media. This requires multiple steps with many software apps to produce the desired results. After completing my thorough hand drawing and painting techniques, I trained on the Apple MacIntosh platform to produce the latest digital files needed in this digital age. Allow me to teach you the steps along the way to successful graphic design career or hobby!

Whatever your art and computer graphic design interests are, allow me to help you achieve your goals each step of the way. Please consider my many years of experience in the illustration ands graphic arts fields and schedule your lessons soon.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe Illustrator

Having used Adobe Illustrator for many years, this software program has enabled me to create various vector art files. Professionally created designs, logos, and documents are demonstrations of how to learn, by projects, this software.

Adobe InDesign

As part of the graphic design curriculum, Adobe InDesign is a key course in my software instructions. As an adjunct instructor, I favor InDesign is an integral part of the Creative Cloud software design package. I used design examples, with how to steps, to arrive at the completed project. InDesign is a powerful tool where you can create page layouts for print, website, or digital publishing. What is really cool is that PhotoShop, and Illustrator work seamlessly with InDesign for quicker project accomplishments.

Adobe Photoshop

As a special note, my website was first designed pages in Photoshop initially, then it was transformed into a website. This is a wonderful way for a designer, who does not particularly want to use web software to design websites commercially.

Desktop Publishing

Desktop publishing is a term that encompasses multiple software application usages. Most specifically it refers to designing and producing print and digital publishing. I will instruct you on these basic software requirements to properly produce digital documents. How to properly work with photos and or illustrations which allow you to import these files into your page layout program. How to properly set and style typography, making it an integral part of your document design. How to properly construct your pages with design principles, color choices, and saving them as required digital file formats. Upon completion of these studies, the student should be able to create new pages, at standard or customized sizes, edit these pages, style and set type, choose and apply colors, and save the document as proper digital files. The student will also be taught the basic requirements for proper printed reproduction of their document. I have successfully instructed many students that have creatively designed and produced documents suitable to display in a professional portfolio.

Drawing

This tutorial is composed of two levels. First, I will instruct you on the basic techniques of drawing. I will demonstrate how to use pencil, colored pencils, ink line, and other controlled media to create beautiful compositions. You will learn from the proven methods that I have trained in and received my BFA degree. Second, you will learn about locating and using a light source, textural drawing surfaces, reflections, and how to plan a pleasing composition. This will be accomplished with keeping a travel sketchbook as well as a large newsprint pad. Using various timed exercises, I will help you obtain confidence as you pace yourself to create many different effects with your drawings. After completion, the student should be able to draw basic geometric shapes, small still lives, and various portraits from real life settings.

Graphic Design

Graphic Designers create various documents, from the conceptual, or the idea stage, through to the final art, production stage. Some are designed for print and others for internet media. From my extensive experience of over 40 years as a designer, I will instruct you with proven methods how to make design choices, color usage, style of typography, photography selection (whether original or stock shots), illustration possibilities, reply back information, product or service promotion, client relationships, and basic legal or ethical regulations. Upon completion of these studies, the student will be able to conceptualize layout ideas, communicate these ideas to the client and propose a schedule for completing the project.

Macintosh

I will instruct you on how to become familiar with the Apple MacIntosh computer platform. For over 30 years, I have been designing, drawing, and producing various graphic design and illustrative pieces for commercial sale with the Mac. I will demonstrate the basic workflow procedures of the Mac operating system, and how you can apply these to your design work. I will show you how to connect to the internet, download and open graphic applications. I will guide you on how to set up an email account. I have extensive experience instructing how to use a sophisticated font program, to manage, add fonts or remove them from your operating system. I have experience in instructing how to add memory to your computer, and replacing a hard drive. My instruction has been on various Macs, as iMac, Pro Laptop, and iPads.

Painting

I will instruct you on the basic techniques of painting. I will demonstrate how to prepare your canvas, pencil in your composition onto the canvas, apply acrylic paints, as either a watercolor or opaque color application. You will learn from the proven methods that I have trained and received an Illustration BFA degree. I have successfully painted pieces for the U.S. Army, John Wieland Homes and Neighborhoods, and more. You will also learn about how to paint basic geometric shapes, simple still lives, and portrait compositions. Oil painting techniques is a second level option for the student. After completion, the student should be able to draw basic geometric shapes, small still lives, and various portraits from real life settings.
