I am a certified English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher for grades K-12 in NC and have taught students of all ages--from teaching TESOL at the English Language Training Institute of UNC Charlotte and preparing students to take the TOEFL exam for U.S. university admission to teaching ESL classes to newly arrived immigrant students in CMS. I graduated from one of the top universities in the U.S., Tufts University in Boston. I majored in History and took courses in Political Science, Economics, Spanish and Biology.
Drawing upon my high school AP Biology class and college biology course, I co-taught high school biology as an ESL teacher as well and utilized creative teaching strategies to make the subject matter comprehensible to ESL and EC students alike. I will soon be taking the Biology Praxis exam to become certified to teach Biology in the state of North Carolina.
I grew up speaking both English and Spanish at home and traveled throughout Colombia, Ecuador and Spain. I enjoy employing an innovative game-based approach to make learning Spanish fun! I like to actively point out the many Latin-based cognates that English and Spanish share as a result of the Norman Conquest of England in 1066. When American students can actively spot the many linguistic similarities between English and Spanish, their anxiety automatically decreases, thereby greatly facilitating their rate of language acquisition. (The same is true for ESL students who speak Latin-based languages like Spanish, French and Portuguese.)
If you need help with any of the aforementioned subjects, please contact me about scheduling a class. I look forward to helping you succeed and have fun in the process! In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I passed the ESL Praxis exam and entered as a lateral entry ESL teacher for Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) district in August 2013. I then completed my Graduate Certificate in TESL from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte in May 2014 while teaching at a CMS high school for the last two years. Previously I also taught at the English Language Training Institute of UNC Charlotte in the summer of 2013.
