About Linda

I am passionate about education, and I love tutoring. I enjoy the one-to-one relationship I have with my students and the opportunity to tailor material to each student's individual needs. I enjoy making learning pleasant, because students learn best when they are relaxed and comfortable. I would love to help you improve your English language skills, write your high school senior paper, prepare for the SAT/ ACT/GRE exams, and write your college essay, I can also help you with organization and study skills. I have extensive experience using research based strategies and methods for instruction and making the material relevant.

I am a retired high school English teacher and college professor of cultural anthropology. I have a Master's Degree in cultural anthropology from the University of New Mexico and have completed graduate coursework at the University of New Hampshire for ESOL certification.

I hold myself to a high standard and for that reason I often ask for feedback from my students. I am flexible with scheduling, however I do have a 24 hour cancellation policy. If a student cancels less than 24 hours prior to a lesson, a cancellation fee of 50% will be assessed. I look forward to working with you towards your success in furthering your education.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I prepare high school students for the English portion of the ACT by teaching strategies for taking standardized tests and for writing a timed essay. I have taught all types of timed and untimed writing from a short, 3-paragraph essay to a 10-page research paper, and I have helped students write their college essays.

ACT Reading

I help students improve their ACT reading scores by teaching critical reading, finding the main idea, understanding the author's purpose, and increasing vocabulary. I provide students with ample practice of ACT reading passages and questions. Most importantly, I teach test-taking strategies that will help my students approach the test with confidence and improve their scores.

English

I have extensive experience teaching English reading, writing, and grammar to students from pre-literacy to college levels. I have taught all types of writing from a short, 3-paragraph essay to a 20-page research paper. I teach strategies and provide sufficient practice and meaningful advice to help students approach English language arts with confidence.

ESL/ESOL

I am a certified ESOL teacher for grades 7-12. I hold a Master's Degree in cultural anthropology and have completed post graduate work in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Through my anthropology education, research fieldwork, and teaching experiences, I have gained an understanding of how a student's culture can impact learning. I have 20 years of experience teaching the English language to adults, university students, and high school students. I have taught refugees and immigrants from more than 20 different language groups and cultures. Many of my high school students have earned college degrees and now have successful careers.

Reading

I help students improve their reading skills by teaching critical thinking, finding the main idea, understanding the author's purpose, and vocabulary. I provide students ample practice with reading passages and comprehension questions. Most importantly, I teach students how to make personal connections to the text. Connecting to the text is fundamental to reading comprehension.

SAT Reading

I help students improve their SAT reading scores by teaching critical reading, finding the main idea, understanding the author's purpose, and increasing vocabulary. I provide students with ample practice of SAT reading passages and questions. Most importantly, I teach test-taking strategies that will help my students approach the test with confidence and improve their scores.

SAT Writing

I have 15 years' experience teaching writing to high school and college students. I have prepared students for the writing portion of the SAT and ACT by teaching strategies for writing a timed essay and building confidence in their writing skills. I have taught all types of writing from a short, 3-paragraph essay to a 10-page research paper, and I have helped students write their college essays.

Study Skills

My philosophy is: External order = internal order. I taught and tutored refugee high school students for nine years. Many of them had no previous formal education or understanding of time management. Teaching these students organization and study skills was my first priority. I have successfully helped students learn to organize and prioritize their work using time management, note-taking tips, agendas, and school or teacher web sites. Most importantly, I encourage students to be self-directed learners.

Writing

I have 15 years' experience teaching writing to high school and college students. I have taught all types of writing from a short, 3-paragraph essay to a 20-page research paper, and I have helped students write their college essays. As a graduate student in Cultural Anthropology, I had extensive experience in academic writing. I've written grant applications and research proposals for faculty, committee, and Internal Review Board approval. I have conducted several field research projects and written reports for presentations at professional meetings.

Very knowledgeable and results oriented tutor

Mrs. Linda was tutoring our son in English grammar, vocabulary, literature, poetry, and we are very pleased with her tutoring. We are definitely planning to hire her for the next school year. Our son enjoys the lessons and is learning a lot. Mrs. Linda is an "old school" teacher who is focused on the results of her tutoring and is not necessarily trying to make everything fun. This is something th
