UNC-Greensboro (Middle Grades Ed.)
I am a current 7th grade Reading teacher. At the end of the school year, I will be wrapping up my 3rd year of teaching. I am thankful to say that I STILL thoroughly enjoy what I do! Teaching is a job that must be done with the heart, for sure! I believe the best of each one of my students, no matter the difficulty. I believe there is hope and possibility in each person. I understand the importance of education, as well as the value behind it. With that being said, I realize that every student does not learn the same way. Some are visual learners, some are auditory learners, and some are kinesthetic learners, or they can be a combination of all learning styles. Also, every student does not learn at the same pace. Some catch on quick and others catch on later. With the diversity that is among students, tutoring holds a valued spot in education and the effects of tutoring can be powerful.
Tutoring, often times, can be associated as something negative. Tutoring is not negative. Receiving tutoring is a good thing! Whether it is to strengthen a certain skill, gain more confidence, or to simply learn something new. You can not go wrong with tutoring. I enjoy the one on one learning that is provided for the student. There is no pressure of keeping up with other people or fear of getting something wrong and being chastised for it. The learner is learning at his or her own pace. They can ask as many questions or go over the same concept a trillion times. Tutoring is personal and that comes with great benefits that are not offered in a group setting. Personally, I like that I can stay with a student until he or she gets it or is satisfied. However, I do believe (like everything else) that you get out of tutoring what you put in to it!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a current 7th grade Reading teacher. I graduated from UNC-Greensboro with a bachelor's degree in Middle Grades Education (6-9) with a concentration in English Language Arts and Social Studies. I began teaching at the rise of the Common Core era, so I am familiar with the standards. Along with teaching in a classroom setting, I have also tutored my students after school. Each year, my students as a whole have shown growth in reading. I like to tailor my tutoring methods to the student but expose them to other ways to learn as well. However, the best qualification is that I enjoy teaching reading!
