I have my MA in German from Middlebury College, a current New Jersey teaching certificate in German and TESOL certification from Philadelphia Biblical University. Most recently I have been employed as an independent contractor, working for agencies where I provided ESL and German tutoring to international businesses and private students. My clients have included engineers, business managers and lawyers. I have also worked with students from kindergarten age through graduate school. I look forward to working with ESL students to their improve oral and written communication skills, pronunciation, reading comprehension, idiom usage, and their understanding of the American culture. Having lived abroad as a student and teacher, I understand what it is like to live and work using a second language in another culture. After completing my MA work in Germany, I taught conversational English for non-credit at the Johannes Gutenberg University and also taught English in a German public school in Alzey where I had students in grades five through eleven. I also look forward to tutoring beginning and intermediate German. My classroom experience includes teaching German on a middle school/junior high level. This was my son's first time with Janice. As soon as they finished and he was asked how it went he said "It was fun". This was coming from a 8 year old taking german lessons. Great job Janice.
Thank you for your kind words, Randall. Your children are a pleasure to work with.
She focused on what I need- for this, she asked me about my weak point before our first meeting and prepared a good ESL material for me, which was considerate and kindly. During tutoring, she was correcting what I made mistakes patiently and practicing useful conversations with me.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Upon completing my MA in German through Middlebury College on the Johannes Gutenberg Universitat campus in Mainz, Germany, I taught English as a foreign language in a German public school in Alzey. I received my TESOL certificate from Philadelphia Biblical University and have tutored both children and adults in the Philadelphia, PA and Raleigh, NC areas. As an independent contractor, I was hired to tutor employees of international businesses. I also tutored family members of those employees which gave me experience in TOEFL and SAT prep.
I have a BA in German from the University of Delaware and an MA in German from Middlebury College. Part of the Middlebury program was to study in Mainz, Germany. Upon completion of my MA, I remained in Germany and taught English in a German public school ("Gymnasium") in Alzey for one year. I taught German on the junior high level in Hershey, PA, and currently hold a NJ teaching certificate for German. In recent years I have tutored German to students ages 12 through adult. I've been able to help school-aged and college students do well in their classes, and have helped adults prepare for jobs or vacations in German-speaking countries.
In high school I took extra "sewing" classes beyond the regular home economics courses. I have made clothes for myself and my children, as well as "American Girl" doll clothes. I have taken quilting classes and have completed a few quilts. I also have made curtains. I know how to use a standard sewing machine and can repair or adjust clothing to a certain degree.
