Hello, Parents and Students,

I know that tutoring can be a costly investment, However, the right tutor can make a measurable difference in improving academic performance. I hope that my tutor profile and certifications will help you assess my suitability as your academic coach.

I enjoy working with young people and adults on a variety of subjects. Art, computers and language arts are my specializations. However, I also enjoy working with math, research methods and science.

I am a recent M.P.A. graduate in health administration with a 4.0 GPA. I am a substitute teacher for K-12 and a long-time tutor. My B.A. is in psychology, so I know a bit about the impact that environmental and social factors have on learning. I am a published, professional writer and artist. Through personal and professional experience, I have learned that much can be accomplished when you believe in yourself.

As a tutor, I am punctual, prepared, patient, and professional. I will do my best to assure a positive learning experience with the best outcomes.

Thank you for visiting my profile. I hope to hear from you!

Adobe Photoshop

I have worked professionally as a graphic designer for over 30 years. I started using a Macintosh in 1990 and have created product and packaging in programs such as Macromedia Freehand, Adobe Illustrator, Quark Xpress, and Adobe Photoshop. I use a Mac at home and Adobe Creative Cloud. Typically, I use Photoshop for color-correcting images and photo retouch. I also enjoy using the program for realistic illustration. I use Photoshop for converting images for the Web and creating special effects with type. I can teach you how to draw using bezier curves, how to work with layers and how to create an illustration from scratch in Photoshop. The version of Photoshop with which I am most familiar, currently, is CC2016. I would love to help you learn to work in PhotoShop. It is an amazing program.

Macintosh

I purchased my first Macintosh computer over 20 years ago, and have been using Macs professionally for graphic design and illustration ever since! I am currently using Adobe Creative Suite version CS6 on my Mac at home. I would be happy to share my knowledge and experience with any student who is entering the "Mac zone" as a novice. I would also be glad to help individuals with some Mac experience to become more comfortable with the OSX platform. Although Macintosh OSX is my preference, I am equally skilled with Windows Vista and Windows 7 on a PC.

My experience in tutoring elementary students comes from working as an academic coach, for several years, with another company that offered in-home tutoring. Primarily, I worked with 2nd and 3rd graders on reading, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and math. I also taught art for a year to children of all ages at a Boys' and Girls' Club, and have facilitated community Art Day projects. My undergraduate degree is in psychology, which helps me to understand motivation and behavior. I am a strong advocate for positive feedback and confidence-building. I have learned that each child has special interests and talents that can be used as motivators. One of my favorite students hated homework, but loved cartoon characters. After learning about his interest in art and cartoon characters, I drew a special cartoon just for him with a motivational message. I presented the drawing to him at the beginning of one of our tutoring sessions, and was amazed at its impact. Many of my students have displayed a lack of self-confidence. A big part of my job as a tutor is convincing my students that they can do the work. There is much truth to the adage, "If you believe it, you can achieve it." I prefer to coordinate tutoring with the child's classroom instructor. Ideally, tutoring should reinforce and build on his/her weekly assignments.

As a liberal arts student, my diverse coursework taught me to develop reasoning and judgment skills. I graduated with honors, earning a B.A. in psychology with art as a related field. However, I also took a broad range of courses such as American Government and Politics, Middle Eastern Politics, American History, History and Contemporary Issues, Philosophy and Sociology. I worked in public service for eleven years and served on my employers' Cultural Competency Committees. I was part of the cross-functional team that developed our first Cultural Competency Plan. I've had trainings in Diversity, which included culture-specific courses designed to increase my understanding of their backgrounds, histories and beliefs. I maintained a 4.0 average in graduate school and obtained a Master's Degree in Public Administration. The curriculum included courses in Health Ethics and Economics. I studied and compared health care systems around the world and learned that cultures view "health" quite differently.

Insightful and a patient tutor

This semester has taught me a lot about the subject of Gerontology, writing, and life. I recommend Penny as a tutor for anyone needing the type of tutor who is a listener first. Furthermore, Penny has helped my writing substantially and given me the confidence to continue working on my craft. Overall, each lesson has proven beneficial as I currently hold a 3.5 GPA in graduate work.
