About Michael

I am a Reference Librarian, Instructor, and English Composition Tutor at Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, North Carolina. I work in Hickory during the week, and live in Gastonia, so I am available as a tutor in a wide geographic area. As far as my academic background and education, I have five degrees, including a Bachelor of Arts in History, and a Master of Arts in Library Science. Because I have a wide academic background, I often assist students with not just English papers, but also in History, Philosophy, Religious Studies, and even Exercise Science. I have tutored students of different grade ranges, and love helping students write strong papers and excel in their education. I take great personal interest in each student I have tutored, and work hard to help them do their best.

Because I work at a private religious university, I have a great interest in Bible studies and general religious studies. I also have a thorough English Literature background and grammar background as well, having studied under thorough english professors as an undergraduate. Because of this, I am aware of a wide span of classical English Literature, from Beowulf to James Joyce. I am proficient at proofreading as well, having a been an editor of a small press publication. On a personal note, I generally read literature and scholarly works in my spare time, which I greatly enjoy.

I love to meet new students and help them with their papers, both for academic success and for their own personal fulfillment. I am very flexible as far as where I tutor, since I live in Gastonia and work in Hickory. Please feel free to contact me, as I am very open to answer any questions you might have. I would love to help you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

I have read the Bible eight times, in many different translations, including: the King James Version, New Revised Standard Version, New International Version, Revised English Bible, New Jersulalem Bible, World Translation Version, and the original Revised Standard Version. I read and study the Bible every day. I know many of the original Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek words in Biblical texts. I also am very familiar with Western Church History and the writings of the Early Church Fathers, as well as more recent developments in Christianity, such as evangelicalism and pentecostalism.

Religion

I have broadly studied world religion at a university level as part of my Bachelor of Arts in History. I have studied and read the Hindu Bhagavad-Gita, the Jewish Talmud and Torah, and the Islamic Holy Qur'an and Hadith. In my personal life, I have also travelled to religious buildings and sites to supplement my university studies in religion, including: Hindu Temples, a Tibetan Buddhist Monastery, Jewish synagogues and Holocaust sites in the United States and Eastern Europe, and Islamic mosques. Particularly in light of Islam in the news so much, I can explain the nuances and doctrine of the religion to students studying current events.
