I enjoy working with kids who are an intellectual challenge. For me, each child is a puzzle, and my job is to solve the riddle of how they think. I try to determine how it is that I can get a particular child to make the step through the gap of understanding in order to learn new things. I think learning with a tutor should be an exciting, out of your seat, actively thinking non-worksheet way to learn. I am a strong believer in the importance of the fundamentals of reading, writing and mathematics, and I think I can do a good job of making those topic interesting (no... really...).
I am a bit different from most elementary school teachers in that I am male (a rarity at about 5% of the total population) and was in the army for 4 years. In addition, I am married, and have two sons of my own, three and five months. I am also a Hickory native, and proud of it. I enjoy working with kids who are an intellectual challenge. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a licensed K-6 math teacher in North Carolina, and scored in the top 95% of test takers on the Praxis 2 test. I have more than 3 years of experience in middle school mathematics.
I am the lead technology educator at the Catawba Science Center in Hickory, NC. I develop effective computer science and technology programming and curricula for grades 3-9. Including the new "Tech Club" program. I have more than 5 years of experience teaching introductory and intermediate level computer science to children.
