Austin College (English)
Clark University - MA in Teaching (Master's)
I began tutoring in high school and haven't stopped since. Following high school years in which I tutored some of my fellow students in English, I completed my bachelor's degree in English (Honors, 3.82 GPA) while taking part in an extensive pre-teaching program, through which I earned a minor in Educational Psychology. I put theory into practice through classroom teaching experiences and volunteering my time with the International Rescue Committee to help refugees learn English as a second language. After enrolling in a Master of Arts in Teaching program (3.85 GPA), I spent a year teaching 9th grade English in an urban high school. While I honed my craft in the classroom through teaching everything from essay-writing to slam poetry to "Romeo and Juliet," I also dedicated many hours to tutoring students one-on-one during free periods and after school. Students who spoke English as a second language, students with cognitive difficulties, and students who just wanted an extra edge all found that they achieved success through their work with me.
I love helping struggling students produce work that they can be proud of, giving hardworking students the tools that they need to push their achievements higher, and offering the personalized, one-on-one support, guidance, and encouragement that all students can thrive under. I believe that with individualized feedback and goal-setting, students will find that they can achieve more than they thought they could, and will become more self-sufficient thinkers and workers in the process.

Our 13 year old has only been seeing Ms. Summer for 3 weeks and has drastically improved in various areas. He has been in school districts that were week in language arts and math from grades 1-6, so he was lacking in a few areas to say the least. He has managed to raise his grade in English/Lit 2 letter grades since tutoring with Summer. It's absolutely amazing! Summer has a special way about learning her student, connecting with them and then using their interests to strengthen their weaknesses. Summer is VERY dedicated, thorough, patient, and encouraging. She does a super awesome job at keeping the parents involved as well every step of the way. Summer is the way to go if you are looking for QUALITY tutoring for your child. We are so happy we found her!
Thanks again Summer!
Summer is helping my son with his writing. What I am really impressed with is how she has made a point to find out how my son learns. She then creates a lesson plan that will enhance his learning. Great Job Summer! Thank you
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Having recently earned a Master of Arts in Teaching for secondary English, I am familiar with the most current best practices in teaching theory. I also have a year of experience teaching 9th grade English, which involved creating my own unit and lesson plans and providing individualized feedback for classes full of students. While teaching, I also engaged in one-on-one tutoring with many students of varying skill levels during free periods and after school, with positive results.
As someone with a B.A. in English and a Master of Arts in Teaching for secondary English, I have a lot of experience with the English language, including editing for grammar, spelling, and punctuation. I have proofread essays and magazine submissions for my peers and students. Additionally, I have spent the past twelve years proofreading fiction on a voluntary basis.
