About Lori

I grew up in Yakima, WA. I have been tutoring for 20+ years. I graduated from EWU in 1990 with a BA in Education with English as my major and health as my minor, both of these subjects were endorsed for the grades of 4-12.

I began tutoring in the Writing Lab at Eastern Washington University for ESL students in 1989. As an education major at EWU, I also taught students around the Cheney and Spokane areas as part of my studies.

After that I worked as a classroom teacher and substituted and in the Los Angeles area for several years in the '90s, and then went on to another career in media. Nearly, a decade later, I came back to my roots of teaching and began tutoring individuals and small groups. I’ve tutored students as young as five years old and as old as twenty-five in the areas of ESL, Language Arts, English, grammar, punctuation, literature, comprehension, writing, editing, and study skills.

I have also been working in the fitness industry since 2007 as a Pilates Instructor/Personal Trainer, and in doing so, I have trained clients as young as teenagers to the elderly. Since 2012, I’ve been a self-employed Pilates Instructor and have been successfully running my business as a solo entrepreneur, which means that I do all of my own marketing, including social networking.

My philosophy when it comes to learning is that it needs to be engaging, dynamic, and fun for the teacher and the learner. It’s my job to get the attention of the learner, keep it, and teach them the objective of the lesson. I have a knack for inspiring and motivating learners to improve. More importantly, I make it my mission to teach them how to retain what we’ve worked on by focusing on repetition of a learned skill.

My favorite thing about words is that you can put them together to tell a story. I have been telling stories and writing since I was three years old. Storytelling and writing are passions of mine that I share with students to help them learn. Stories are what bonds us together, creates our histories, and help us to remember details when we are learning something new. No matter what subject I am teaching, I utilize writing in a way that the student is excited about learning. I take pride in helping students get over their fear of writing. It is a skill that they will need for the rest of their lives, so when I tutor a student, implementing writing in their lesson plan is a given.

Learning is a lifelong activity and it should be done with joy. That is also what I want to help students find – a joy in learning rather than angst.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I have taught children English and helped them improve their grades and their learning skills.

Fitness

I have been working as a professional Pilates Instructor/Personal Trainer in the fitness industry since 2007. Since 2012, I’ve been a self-employed Pilates Instructor and have been successfully running my business as a solo entrepreneur. Over the course of my career, I have taught group cardio and weight training classes as well as private sessions. I have also long been a student of yoga and have incorporated its poses in my Pilates practice. However, my primary focus has always been Pilates in which I have taught group mat, ball, and foam rolling Pilates classes and workshops. I have also taught buddy Reformer sessions. My specialty is private one-on-one Reformer Pilates.

Grammar

I graduated from EWU in 1990 with a BA in Education with English as my major and health as my minor; both of these subjects were endorsed for grades 4-12. I also taught students English as part of my studies.

I have been employed by Score (small group tutoring), No Child Left Behind (individual tutoring), Teachers on Reserve (substitute teaching), and Club Z (individual tutoring). For all of these jobs and positions, I have taught grammar and helped students improve their grades and their understanding of grammar.

Literature

I have taught literature comprehension and helped students improve their grades.

Study Skills

Besides having my teaching degree, I was required to help students with their study skills. The areas entailed organization, time management, learning how to focus, learning how to prioritize workload, learning how to retain information, learning how to utilize information learned, and how to take multiple choice tests with success (the process of elimination).

Writing

The main focus of my English major was literature comprehension and writing proficiency. I have taught writing proficiency, and helped students find a love for reading and writing.

No matter what subject I am teaching, I utilize writing in a way that the student is excited about learning. I take pride in helping students get over their fear of writing. It is a skill that they will need for the rest of their lives, so when I tutor a student, implementing writing in his or her lesson plan is a given.
