I am a graduate of the English/History program at East Carolina University and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where I obtained my Teaching Certificate. I taught for two years in Alamance County in the public school system but my primary teaching experience was raising four daughters. My working career evolved into becoming a small business owner but I have always kept up with current Literature and the Arts, especially music, since I write piano compositions and play professionally.
I consider myself to be very patient in regard to the conveyance of information. Often this is more an opportunity for me to improve my delivery rather than an expectation that the student needs to try harder. Teaching is a gift and I am reverent of this ability. An honest attempt is all I require from my students and evaluations on a steady basis by parents, administrators, etc is welcomed. Objectives must be laid out as well as current difficulties and my own assessment within a timeframe chosen by the student (and parents) is an opportunity for me to re-evaluate the initial status, communicate this and together we proceed to a successful educational conclusion or program.
Teaching is nothing more than showing a love for the subject matter. It is a joy of life to welcome not only learning for learning's sake, but also to exhibt the world wrapped up in a particular subject matter. From the experience of "defeating the difficult", we come to the experience of gaining knowledge. This will bleed into all other areas of a student's development.
Literature and the piano are my own particular strengths but developing these same strengths in others, particularly children also opens the door for them to develop their own talents and aptitudes in areas they themselves define. The objective of all tutoring professionals, it seems to me, is to develop an appetite for all subjects as we tackle and defeat the fear and intimidation from struggling with an academic problem. My first hour with any new student is complimentary. The final rate per hour is determined within a week of lessons...how much I can help, the student's needs, the family budget, etc.
Joseph has excellent an rapport with my 2 sons who take lessons from him. He is patient and very accomplished. Lessons have structure, but are fun.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have used Photoshop since version 4, which goes back to 1996. I have attended several Photoshop World conferences and use it in my own photography and other business needs. I certainly do not know it all, but I can give you general and some specific instructions, depending on your skill level and on your objectives.
I minored in History as an English major at ECU. History is kin to English in that they both are involved in story telling. History is often nothing more than gleaning the story from the facts and circumstances that often don't seem to relate. A good historian can find the story and sew the seams of all that would be relative to us today and to those of us to come.
I majored in English at ECU and graduated with a BA degree. I taught high school for two years before moving back to my hometown of Morehead CIty and starting a business. I have always written poetry and in 2009 became a published poet. English grammar and literature are second nature to me but that doesn't mean I am necessarily an excellent teacher. What is does mean is that I may be able to help someone become more "natural" in their dealings with the subject and maybe, in time, develop a love as well as a "feel" for the subject.
I have been on a Mac since 1986, from the Classic OS to the current 10.7.4. I have enough knowledge to escort the beginner and the intermediate user.
I am lucky to be able to say that I have played the piano since I was 9. I have learned how to play by ear and have recorded several CD's of my own original music. I cannot teach the classics or read music like a "regular" music teacher, but I can provide lessons and a basic understanding of the keyboard that really should be taught to young people before, or at least at the same time, as they learn to read. Depending on the level, my services would probably not exceed past the point of the student "getting it." But then, they will be able to proceed and succeed on their own.
I was fortunate to take a study skills class in high school, which was critical for me in learning how to take advantage of my study time. By identifying the bad habits and encouraging the positive traits of the "homework routine," students can obtain the opportunity to take charge of their study time, improve their grades and then have the opportunity to enjoy their other activities.
