About Shannadora

I truly believe that with the right tools EVERY student can be successful.

Each student is an individual, with a unique learning style—and unique learning challenges. My passion lies in discovering that unique style and helping students to overcome those challenges. True learning calls for a personal approach. Here’s where I come in…

I am a highly skilled and versatile instructor with a track record of success. I have trained with one of the top educational service providers in the world and am certified in several areas including : Instructional Management, Math, Reading, ACT, SAT, and Advanced Study Skills.

While I am skilled in several subjects, my greatest loves are math and science. I have a B.S. in Chemical Engineering and a M.S. in Molecular Medicine so as you can imagine I enjoy crunching numbers and solving problems!

I have helped students turn F’s into A’s and earn standardized test scores that have led to vocational placement, college, nursing school, and military admissions. Simply put—I help others achieve their academic and professional goals. I am an expert at connecting with students of all ages and motivating them to thrive.

My favorite part about it all is that I get to play a role in helping others gain knowledge, confidence, and success in their lives so that they get inspired to go out into the world and do great things!

I have taken many math and science courses as a part of my academic studies and professional training which include pre-algebra, algebra I/II, geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus, calculus, and differential equations, physics, material science, electrical engineering, thermodynamics, transport phenomena, physiology, biology, neuroendocrinology, chemistry (quantitative, pulp and paper, analytical, organic, inorganic, and biochemistry), chemical process principles, chemical reaction engineering, chemical engineering process design and economics, and chemical and bio-process control.

I have hands-on laboratory research experience as well. Because of this experience, I have a knack for relating the information found in textbooks to the real world. Science is so much more than memorizing facts—and I’m here to help you see that.

I’ll be the first to admit that math and science can be very tricky and abstract subjects to understand sometimes. I use a visual (and often Socratic) method of teaching to help students turn frustration into confidence and master tough skills. I urge students to draw pictures and come up with acronyms, mnemonics, etc. to help them not only understand the material itself, but to understand why it’s relevant in the real world. I equip students with techniques and strategies to help them learn the material, not just get the answer.

Standardized tests can be stressful. Trust me—I’ve been there. What I’ve found is that a huge cause for this stress in most students is a lack of confidence and preparation. I am here to help you gain the skills and confidence you need to do well on WHATEVER test you take. Using a unique and personal approach that involves analyzing the specific test structure and scoring methods, I provide students with tips and strategies to help them answer questions more quickly and efficiently. I help students to think in terms of key concepts so that they are able to attack even the trickiest of problems (including those crazy word problems)!

With the right tools EVERY student can be successful. Please contact me to learn more about how I can help you to reach your academic and professional goals, and to schedule an appointment today. Let’s get you started on your path to success!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemical Engineering

I completed my Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering at North Carolina State University. As a student, I was a Teaching Assistant in the Introduction to Engineering & Problem Solving (E101) course. In this role I assisted with teaching engineering course material, and the design and construction of students’ engineering design projects.

I also served as the appointed group leader on a design project required for degree completion. The goal of the project was to design a fed-batch fermentation process that would prevent undesirable chemical byproducts, as well as increase cell growth and Green Fluorescent Protein production. My responsibility was to correspond weekly with the university’s Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center on the progress, costs and operational requirements of the design. I also assisted with material balances and sizing calculations for downstream (recovery and purification) unit operations, as well as the cost analysis and process production schedule for the project.

The process that our group designed was implemented as a training tool for students enrolled in the university’s course in large-scale biomanufacturing.

I have also interned with Dow Chemical Company and Milliken & Company; two of the top specialty chemical companies in the country.

I worked on an independent Process Automation project as an intern at Dow Chemical Company. My work consisted of utilizing simulation software to model operating conditions for critical chemical processes. I also created an easy-to-use manual for the simulation software to be used by the Process Automation team.

As a Printing Department intern in a Dye & Finishing Plant at Milliken & Company, I created and implemented a procedure for use of a handheld spectrophotometer and industrial mixer. These efforts improved chemical dispersion and overall fabric preparation, and reduced fabric preparation time by more than half, resulting in thousands of dollars of annualized labor savings. I worked closely with a team of engineers and operators, and created a user-friendly manual and one point lessons for equipment operation that were used by plant associates and managers.

In addition to my experience in industry, I also have experience in engineering education. I have served as an Engineering Teaching Fellow. In this role I worked as a math and science teacher's aide at a local elementary school in the Wake County Public School system. I was responsible for creating and instructing hands-on math, science, and engineering lesson plans for 3rd and 4th graders.

I have trained with one of the top educational service providers in the world and am corporate certified in several areas which include Robotics and Coding. I currently teach weekly Robotics and Coding Workshops to children in grades 2-6.

Organic Chemistry

I took both Organic Chemistry I and Organic Chemistry II as a part of my undergraduate coursework in Chemical Engineering. I excelled in both of the courses, which were requirements for my degree completion.

I have first-hand experience applying many of the fundamental concepts learned in these courses. I interned at Dow Chemical Company and Milliken & Company; two of the top specialty chemical companies in the world. I worked in a dye & finishing plant, and polyethylene manufacturing plant, respectively.

I have also used many organic chemistry methodologies, techniques, and reagents in a research laboratory environment as a part of my graduate research training in Molecular Medicine. Understanding and applying many of the common principles and techniques were a key part of my daily lab duties and responsibilities.

Praxis

I am well-versed in the Common Core aligned curriculum that is the basis of much of the content on the PRAXIS exam. I assist with all aspects of this curriculum on a daily basis in my role as an Instructor. In this role I have also assisted several clients who were working towards certification for their teaching credentials. I specifically assisted them with test preparation for the PRAXIS exam. As a result I have gained a thorough understanding of the test structure and content, as well as a knowledge of strategies for test-taking.

Study Skills

I am corporate certified in Advanced Study Skills by a leading educational service provider, and I teach the subject on a weekly basis. I have been trained in several areas focused on key topics including time management, strategic and academic planning, organization, goal-setting, expectation management, and effective note taking. As a part of this training I am able to identify student learning preferences, and tailor study strategies and techniques based on their preferred mode of learning and individual goals.
