About Adrian

I'm what you might call a Renaissance Man or a Jack of All Trades. I have my main area of expertise, which is multimedia art and design, but there are several other areas that I'm pretty good at, too.

In 2004, I graduated from Forestview High School with honors (Summa Cum Laude) and immediately went to college at Appalachian State University to major in music industry studies. After two years at ASU, I realized that the music industry really wasn't the path I wanted to travel down, so I transferred to East Carolina University's School of Art and Design. I graduated in December of 2014 with a Bachelor's of Fine Arts in Animation and Interactive Design.

The areas I am strongest in are:
• Painting and drawing (especially figure drawing)
• Character design
• Illustration
• 3D modeling
• Motion graphics
• Video editing

Art and design-specific programs I tutor in include:
• Photoshop
• Illustrator
• InDesign
• After Effects
• Lightroom
• Bridge
• Maya (intro-level modeling, texturing, and animation)

Some of my other skills and talents include:

Computers: I'm skilled in several computer programs, including most of the Adobe Creative Suite (like Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Dreamweaver) as well as Maya and Mudbox for 3D art. I'm used to using both Mac and PC computers for basic, every day work as well as art and graphics, music composition, audio editing, video editing, and more. I can also tutor basics like how to set up email, web browsers, and files. I have an intermediate to advanced understanding of Microsoft Word, a basic understanding of Excel, and an intermediate understanding of PowerPoint. I know basic HTML, CSS, and some Actionscript, but any other coding is beyond my level of expertise. I do NOT tutor in C++, Python, Java, or other programming languages.

If you want a unique and fun tutoring experience, I'm definitely your guy. I try to tailor my teaching methods to each person's specific style. I know some students are stronger at audio-visual learning and others are better at logic, reading, and memorization, so I try to be flexible and find the best way to help you learn. I personally learn best through visuals, music, and association. When I'm explaining a new concept, I tend to employ the use of metaphors that the student can relate to.

As someone who grew up struggling with severe ADHD, I COMPLETELY understand how hard it is to focus when lessons are boring and tedious. I want to help you find something meaningful and useful in your lessons and show you that you've got what it takes to master anything you put your mind to. If you struggle with something, then maybe we're not approaching it the right way. Let's get creative and use the skills, talents, and interests you already have to build something bigger and better!

"Fantastic Photoshop and Illustrator tutor!"

"Knowledgeable and engaging tutor."

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe Illustrator

I learned to use Illustrator by attending an Essential training course on as part of my college degree. I have used Adobe Illustrator for both school projects and work assignments for over 5 years. I use it primarily for designing logos, flyers, posters, and advertisements, but it has also come in handy for creating assets for animation projects in Flash and After Effects.

Adobe InDesign

I completed a week-long Essential Training Course for Adobe InDesign CC and I have been successfully tutoring in this subject since May 2016. I use this program on a regular basis for my freelance graphic design work.

Adobe Photoshop

I have used Photoshop for nearly 10 years for a wide variety of projects, including photo editing, short animations, drawing and painting, graphic novels, and laying out mockups for web design. I took two full courses on to further flesh out my understanding of the program, and several of my college courses have utilized Photoshop for projects and assignments. I am extremely comfortable with this program.

Autodesk Maya

My field of study is in animation and interactive design and I have taken several college courses in 3D modeling, animation, lighting, and rendering using Autodesk Maya. I have an intermediate level of knowledge of this program and I use it frequently for portfolio projects. I have used Maya for character modeling, rigging, texture painting, building environments, animation, some particle systems, lighting, and much more. Please contact me if you wish to see examples of work.

I graduated in December of 2014 with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Animation and Interactive Design. Part of my required course work included basic drawing, figure drawing, and composition. I have taken several classes in painting and drawing, in addition to over 15 years of drawing and sketching experience.

General Computer

I have owned my own computers since 1996 for everything from basic, everyday functions like email, using the internet, creating and saving files and games to complex creative endeavors like game design, digital painting, and 3D modeling and animation. I know how to use both Macintosh and Windows computers, including how to customize the interface, set up networks, and add and remove programs. I also have experience in troubleshooting a wide range of issues on both Macintosh and Windows.

I have taken seven semesters of college Japanese (3 of which were audited for my own review) and I have done private tutoring in the past for basic, elementary Japanese. I have plenty of teaching materials in this subject, including 2 textbooks with accompanying workbooks, several small books on Japanese culture and language, dictionaries, grammar handbooks, kanji workbooks, flash cards, audio CDs, and a wide range of online resources for studying. I am by no means fluent, but I can teach the basics.

I am familiar enough with Macintosh computers to teach the basics of using one, including but not limited to keyboard shortcuts, customizing the interface, installing and removing programs, using the Terminal to make administrative changes, and using Mac-specific programs. As a multimedia artist and animator, I do most of my work on a Macintosh computer and have been using one since 2008.

I have taken 3 college courses in painting and composition as part of my degree in animation and interactive design. My paintings have won awards in exhibitions, scholarships for tuition, and were published in Rebel 56, East Carolina University's annual art publication. I am knowledgeable in the use of traditional media, such as acrylic and oil paints, as well as digital media such as Photoshop. Please contact me for examples of my work.

Video Production

As part of my degree in animation, I have taken two college courses that focused solely on video art and film editing, and I have used video editing software for nearly every animation class I have taken. I am familiar with both Adobe Premiere and Final Cut Pro X, and some of my film pieces have won awards in exhibitions.
