About Michelle

Success in school is about reinforcement and applying the knowledge you've been given in the classroom. During the beginning of the school year, many students slack off because the teacher is reviewing basic concepts or have become distracted by their friends and extracurricular activities. Parents, don't wait until the year progresses to find out your son/daughter has missed out on the bulk of the material being taught! Send an email to find out how to get started with a tutoring session within the week. You won't regret it!

I am a tutor that's been recently relocated to the area from Miami, FL. There, I earned a Bachelor's degree in Psychology and a minor in Criminal Justice and am now in the process of earning my Master's in Clinical Counseling. While my education is in Psychology, my work experience and volunteer work throughout the community has all been in education. I am highly recommended by clients and very experienced, having mentored special needs foster children and previously provided tutoring for students ages 3 and up. I have 5+ years of experience in tutoring, including over 500 hours with WyzAnt, Inc.

I provide evening or weekend tutoring sessions for students ranging from Preschool curriculums to Undergraduate education. While math and reading are my primary focus, I have experience in all of my qualified subjects. I have assisted with school projects (science fair projects/classroom projects), essay writing (including research papers and exploratory papers), homework assignments, and exam preparation. I also have experience with helping to write and edit admissions essays, as well as preparing students for the SAT/ ACT exams in the Fall.

"Not what I expected"

- Mayela, Miami, FL on 2/14/13
Michelle replied on 2/14/2013

Mayela, I am so sorry you feel that way. It makes me uneasy to know that after everything I've done to try and accommodate you, you were still unhappy with my services. The first session went well, and I was looking forward to working with your son. From the get- go, you were unable to afford my fee so I was happy to reduce the fee by $10 in order to better serve you. I am a full- time university student, and I tutor approximately 10 hours per week. I have six other students who are content with my services, and fortunately, I have never had an issue arise like this one. Being in school all day and then having students to attend to, I was unable to reply right away to your email. When you notified me that you would be unable to make it because of my lack of a prompt reply and the long drive you'd have to make, I kindly suggested you find a tutor who would be more suitable to achieve the expectations of you and your son.

"Excellent algebra tutor."

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I took Algebra 1 while still in middle school and received a final grade of an "A." This is one of my favorite subjects to teach because there is a variety of methods for solving Algebraic problems, rather than only one way being the right way. I aim to work with the student and find the best method to use in order to tackle each problem they're faced with.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have tutored students from as young as 3 years old. One of my strengths is math, specifically Elementary- level math. I've also tutored in reading, science, and social studies at an Elementary- school level. I am involved in many extra- curricular activities involving children and believe that education should be a priority.

Elementary Math

I have tutored several students in Elementary level math. I utilize a handful of teaching methods, including games, worksheets, and demonstrations on solving problems. Math is one of my favorite subjects, and I truly enjoy working with students in this subject.

Elementary Science

From matter to energy to the types of rock, Elementary science is my kind of subject! I am currently majoring in a science field, and I have experience in tutoring science. When tutoring science in the past, I've helped students complete science experiments, class projects, and research.

English

I have taken AP Language and Composition at the high school level and a handful of English and Rhetoric courses in undergraduate school so I am familiar with many of the writing requirements. I have written a huge variety of essays, research papers, analyses, summaries, etc. In my opinion, writing is such a crucial part of one's education, and I am confident that I can help inspire you/ your child into becoming a better writer. I have excellent grammar skills, a strong vocabulary, and a lot of experience tutoring writing skills and editing writing assignments.

Grammar

Grammar is a fundamental part of learning. I believe every child should have the experience in learning grammar skills and basic grammar "rules". I did phenomenal in my Advanced English Language and Composition course and have taken several workshops specific to grammar. I am confident that I have what it takes to instill grammar education in you/ your child.

Prealgebra

Algebra is my absolute favorite subject to teach. It includes so much material, and fortunately, most problems tie into one another. Another great part of Algebra is that it's relatable and can be used in the real world. I absolutely love teaching and reinforcing Algebra skills, and I am sure that you/ your child would benefit from sessions with me.

Proofreading

"There is always room for improvement." is a common phrase used by teachers. Proofreading is simply an additional set of eyes to review work and implement new ideas to improve your writing. I believe that I would be an asset to proofreading any of your/ your child's work.

Psychology

I am a graduate student at East Carolina University, majoring in Clinical Counseling. My Bachelor's degree is in Psychology so I have a heavy background with psych coursework at the university level. I have also taken both Psychology I and II in high school so I am familiar with the high school coursework, as well as the AP exam for Psychology. Continuing my education in psychology has expanded my familiarity with so much material in different areas of psychology. I have excelled at my knowledge of both old and modern psychology terms, and I am very confident in the subject. I think I would be a valuable asset to anyone who needs help in psychology.

Reading

Reading is a fundamental part of learning any subject. I believe that reading is the limelight to success and without it, there will be immense struggle. When tutoring in reading, I make sure students thoroughly understand what they're reading and they fully comprehend the surrounding material. I emphasize the use of context clues and inference clues.

SAT Writing

My junior year in high school, I passed AP Language and Composition with an "A." During the final two years of high school, I had written such a plethora of multiple varieties of writing. These include: essays, research papers, summaries, analyses, and grant proposals. In my opinion, writing is such a crucial part of maintaining an education and excelling on the SAT. I have excellent grammar skills, a strong vocabulary, and a lot of experience in tutoring writing. I took my SAT only one time and exceeded the 2012 averages in each portion of the test, making me confident that I will be an asset in your child's success on this standardized test.

Study Skills

I am a current graduate school student who has always maintained good study habits, and I would be an asset in helping you/ your child study as well. Many people are passive learners and are used to memorizing before tests. What is more crucial to memorizing is understanding. I'd be thrilled to be an additional motivator to you/ your child.

Vocabulary

As a university student, I have a wide range of vocabulary. Each day is an opportunity to learn more and expand my word bank. As a tutor, I will implement the lessons I was taught to expand my vocabulary. Vocabulary is not about knowing a word and how to spell it, it's about understanding the word and creating meaning to the word. As a tutor, I'd help you/ your child "understand" their vocabulary.

Writing

I have taken AP Language and Composition at the high school level and a handful of English and Rhetoric courses in undergraduate school so I am familiar with many of the writing requirements. I have written a huge variety of essays, research papers, analyses, summaries, etc. In my opinion, writing is such a crucial part of one's education, and I am confident that I can help inspire you/ your child into becoming a better writer. I have excellent grammar skills, a strong vocabulary, and a lot of experience tutoring writing skills and editing writing assignments.
