I have been teaching English as a Second Language to adults since 1994, both abroad and here in the United States. I lived in Switzerland for 13 years and spent 10 of those years teaching English. I have always wanted to be a teacher, and I feel it is something that I was born to do. I enjoy working with international students, especially, since I can also learn from them. They teach me about their cultures, languages and traditions which allows me to broaden my own horizons.
In addition, I have had the advantage of living in another country and learning other languages, so I understand firsthand, how it feels to be a language learner. This enables me to empathize with my students since I understand the difficulties they encounter learning a new language.
I am currently employed as an ESL instructor at a local university and have been there for almost 9 years. Our program is intensive and we teach reading, writing, listening and speaking skills to international students who are interested in attending university in the US. The focus of our program is on academic English since they will need this when they start college. Since our program is intensive (9 week terms), the students must do homework every night in order to make the necessary progress in that short amount of time.
Our students must write everything from paragraphs to research papers depending on the level they are in (there are 5 levels), so I am able to work on content, organization, grammar, vocabulary, etc. I also work with students on reading strategies, pronunciation, presentation skills and listening skills.
I have an M.Ed. in English as a Second Language teaching from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.
I am looking forward to working with students who need help with ESL or reading and writing. I can travel to your home, within 20 miles, or you can come to my home. I live in Greensboro quite close to Market St. and Friendly Ave. which are 2 main streets in Greensboro.
I would prefer to work with adult students; however, I would also consider older teenagers. Please contact me if you need help with improving your English skills. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
