About Brandon

I really enjoy teaching people who are interested in a subject matter and want to learn more. It's a great feeling to be able to make my knowledge of use to other people and to get them interested in learning more about our crazy interesting world.

I prefer tutoring in the natural sciences, but I've gone through the rigmarole of math classes and standardized tests necessary to be a science major. I have very broad interests though and took a diverse set of courses at my liberal arts undergrad. So I also have extensive experience in literature, history, classics, and philosophy.

I graduated from UNC with honors in 2013 with a BS in Biology, a second major in Environmental Studies, and minors in Chemistry and Latin. I left UNC with 200 credit hours of courses (only 20 of which were AP credit), which averaged out to something like 19 credit hours per semester - so I'm good at managing time and studying efficiently. You can check out my subject qualifications below for whatever area you specifically need help with.

If you're interested in pursuing ecology, ornithology, entomology, mammalogy, botany, or any other natural science I can also give good career and graduate school advice.

I can come to meet you wherever you're most comfortable studying. Send me an e-mail if you're interested in me as a tutor, or even if you just want advice.

I earned a perfect score on the GRE verbal section and scored in the 163 out of 170 in the Quantitative section. So I'm comfortable tutoring for either the GRE or SAT, since they're essentially the same test.

After graduation I spent a year in Africa, working in francophonic Gabon as an ecology research assistant. I spent then spent 3 months traveling around Europe, including 1 month on a farm in France. I speak basic French and can tutor beginners or have conversations.

Being a biology major and intending to go to graduate school requires a great deal of math. I continue to use math and statistics in my everyday work as a research technician-it's something I'm engaged in every day. I struggled with most maths throughout middle school and high school and understand how frustrating it can be. I'd like to help anyone who struggles like I did to improve themselves so they're not held back from excelling in related fields.

I was a Biology major at UNC and have worked as a technician doing applied ecological research since graduation. I have a broad knowledge of many different fields within biology since I was required to take classes in most sub-sets of it during undergrad. I also have a deep understanding of ecology, as it was and continues to be my focus.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Philosophy

I've taken college courses in ethics, political philosophy, classical philosophy, environmental philosophy, and continue to read more in my free time. Philosophy is as much a way of thinking as it is a field of study. It can be difficult to get into that way of thinking - I can help with that.
