About Elizabeth

I have a PhD in Exceptional Children, National Board Teaching Certification, and 19 years experience as a special education teacher and private consultant. My areas of specialty are with children with Asperger's or high functioning autism, ADHD, and dyslexia. I have taught elementary, middle, and high school. I recently left teaching to raise my baby. I am looking to tutor a few hours each week.

Through my 19 years of teaching, I have been involved with writing state curriculum and implementing new methods in my classroom. The common core is the newest curriculum. It has very high standards! Let me help your child reach these high expectations.

I specialize in working with individuals with Asperger's or high functioning autism and dyslexia. In college I learned the Spalding Method of teaching reading and spelling to individuals with dyslexia. Since then, I have used this method with numerous children in my classroom and as a private tutor. My experience with individuals with Asperger's or high functioning autism is extensive. I have developed specialized education programs for this population in Pennsylvania and North Carolina. I have also been an Autism Support Specialist who worked with schools, families, and individuals to improve academic, vocational, and social functioning.

I try to be flexible with time. I have a 24 hour cancellation policy.

I look forward to helping you with your academic, vocational, or social goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADHD

I have been a special education teacher for 19 years and have worked with many students with ADHD. I have also worked with students with ADHD in tutoring situations. In one of my teaching situations I worked with a local psychiatrist on determining appropriate medications and educational programming for a set of students. This experience helped me understand the complexities these individuals encounter and how to creatively address their deficits.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

I have taught special education for 19 years. I have had exclusively autism classrooms for 7 years and was an itinerant autism support specialist for 1 year. I have set up 2 public school programs for individuals with high functioning autism. My PhD research involved students with autism.

Common Core

Through my 19 years of teaching, I have been involved in curriculum writing at the state level. The common core is our most recent mandated curriculum. Through tutoring and teaching I have become familiar with this and have worked with many students on this curriculum.

Dyslexia

I was first interested in becoming a special education teacher through my work with individuals with dyslexia - and this continues to be one of my passionate areas for teaching. I love helping students learn to read and spell. Individuals with dyslexia are very smart, and they need very specific methods used to learn to read and spell. I have been using methods for individuals with dyslexia for over 20 years.

Elementary (K-6th)

I began tutoring elementary students in college. I mainly taught reading and math skills at that time. When I graduated, my first teaching job was teaching 5th grade. I taught all academic subjects while in this position. Since then, I have continued to work with elementary student through tutoring.

ESL/ESOL

I have been fortunate to work with children through adults in the area of ESL. My students have come from all over the world. I use technology to help students create a multidimensional understanding of the English language. I also tailor my instruction to what my students need. School students need very different skills than adults.

Phonics

For many individuals, the way they learn to read is through the use of phonics. I have used phonics based methods for over 20 years - both in the classroom and in individual tutoring sessions. I use the Spalding method of learning phonics and integrate these methods into reading.

Special Needs

I have taught special education for 19 years. I have taught students with 11 of the 13 disabilities under IDEA. I have set up programs in a variety of school settings and in traditional schools as well as public separate schools.
