I get excited when it involves teaching young children reading and writing. I love the look on the faces of children when they know they have achieved a goal. It makes my heart flutter to see a child read a difficult passage and not be afraid to sound out or look for clues in figuring out unfamiliar words.
I have worked as a tutor since 2006 working inside Guilford County Schools for that period as well in private locations, tutoring small groups in reading and math. My specialty is working with second graders and beginning readers. I love working right at where reading becomes introduced into life skills and children begin viewing reading in everyday situations and using those skills in all areas of life.
I am able to meet children where they are and have fun doing. I like to bring the world into my tutoring.
I worked many years as a nursing assistant, then research before eventually beginning to tutor. As a researcher I administered many educational tests that examined areas which were lacking in academic performance for children in all demographic areas and possible causes of that lack. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
