About Garrett

I am an educator with over 15 years of experience in speaking and writing and have won many awards in these areas as well as in the visual arts. I became an educator because it is the most intense form of learning. I began my teaching career as a tutor for high school and college French and middle eastern students. I am a visual learner and believe in helping students leverage their most developed sense(s) to become effective and efficient learners. Tutoring, for me, offers the most satisfying form of educational engagement. It is direct, personable, and immediate--offering student and tutor alike opportunities to discover experiences and abilities that facilitate learning.

I am especially skilled in the language arts, beginning with reading (grammar, punctuation, spelling, paragraphing, critical thinking), public speaking (speech fright management, poise, delivery, research) and writing (informative and persuasive essays). I offer strong scholarly abilities in writing and interpreting literary forms such as poetry, drama, creative nonfiction, and various schools of literary criticism. I look forward to meeting you and helping you find those as yet unrealized abilities that will help you succeed in school and in your career. Your success is my success.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Drawing

I have taken many studio classes in art at Laredo Community College and have been drawing since I was a child. I can do representational, figurative line drawings in pencil, watercolor, pastel, and pen and ink.

Literature

I have had over 10 years of training in reading, writing about poetry drama, and fiction. Most of my essays in school received A's and B's. In writing about literature, it is best to find an original point of view that might be triggered by scholarly readings or specific approaches (psychological, historical, neocritical, etc). I like to focus on the importance of the first chapter, first act, and first line of the poem as it sets the stage for future developments in the work. Though there can be no substitute for a close reading of the text, a student can b helped greatly by an understanding of the strategies authors employ in their work.

Photography

I have been an amateur photographer for over 15 years and have won prizes for black and white and color photography , exhibiting my work at spring student exhibitions at Laredo community college and at contests sponsored by the Laredo Art League. I have used and have SLR cameras (Konica, Pentax 55 mm) and have used various filters and lenses. I have done lab wrok developing positives from negatives. I am also familiar with digital cameras and use a lumix to take pictures of landscapes, animals, and people. I excel at composition and in using picasa to enhance my photos.

Public Speaking

I have a degree in speech communications from the University of Arizona and have taught the subject at the community college level for over 15 years.

Reading

To be an English major, you have to be an efficient and and effective reader. I began reading heavily in the 4th grade. My reading and writing skills were evaluated in the seventh grade to be equivalent of first year college. I offer a structure based approach to reading essays and nonfiction, focusing on the implied or overtly stated thesis and its development in the body of the work with relevant and sufficiently supported subtopics.
Punctuation is best handled through the spoken word and spelling is mostly a visual affair. Vocabulary is best handled through etymologies and an understanding of the linguistic roots of the English language.

Theatre

I have written, directed, acted, and taught Theater at De la Salle College, the Manila Theater Guild, the University of Arizona, and at Laredo Community College where I was the theater director. I have done scene design, music, and stage choreography.
