About Hallie

THE BASICS

My name is Hallie, and I am a rising 2L at the University of Michigan Law School. Prior to beginning my law degree, I spent two years teaching abroad and studied for my Master's in English.

THE LSAT

The LSAT is, at its core, a learnable test, and I possess both the knowledge and teaching experience to help others master that test as an LSAT instructor.

I had to fight for the score I received on the LSAT; it is not an ability that came to me naturally. I cancelled the score of the first LSAT I took after I balked at a difficult game on my second session. However, I refused to allow a test to best me. Therefore, I signed up once again and practiced by taking five diagnostic tests a week for the six weeks preceding the testing date. Through my work, I was able to score a 172 on my exam.

In the course of my studies, I noted the patterns and reasoning methods that comprised the methodology of the LSAT. I developed a familiarity with the question stems and discerned what core concepts the exam was designed to question. I learned that the LSAT could be mastered through practice and hard work, and now I want to use these lessons to help others master that test as well.

TEACHING HISTORY

Serving as a teacher does more than just instruct students; it is a teacher's job to equip the students to see the path that will lead to their own success.

This position requires a high level of proficiency in writing and a background in the humanities. At the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, I received a degree in Philosophy, where I researched the impact of the Pre-Socratic philosophers on world literature. In addition, I completed a minor in the Fiction track of the English Creative Writing program and was admitted into the advanced level courses, which accept less than 25% of program participants.

While completing my undergraduate studies, I participated as an instructor in numerous activities. I served as captain of Carolina Mock Trial for six semesters, in which I taught participants U.S. legal code and the Federal Rules of Evidence. In addition, I instructed students on how to prepare courtroom statements and prepped them on courtroom etiquette. I was elected to the position of Deputy General for Attorney General Staff, and I was entrusted with training and teaching all new recruits on our university’s honor system and how to defend students charged with an honor code violation.

This love of teaching led me to accept a position as a foreign English teacher in China, where I instructed middle school and high school students at a premier boarding school in the eastern city of Yuyao. I taught eighteen to twenty classes per week, each class consisting of 45 students or more. During my second semester, I expanded my course load to include four classes at a local elementary school as well as private tutoring sessions three times a week. I drafted lesson plans, created classroom games and activities, and reviewed students’ progress throughout each term. My goal centered on making English engaging and entertaining for each class. Therefore, I researched innovative teaching methods and devoted time to activities and classroom interaction rather than relying on book instruction. This experience has allowed me both to refine my teaching abilities and determine which methods best enable students to take charge of their own educational development. I hope to use these skills to contribute to courses in your school.

I then worked as an English, social studies, and science instructor at an international school in the Dominican Republic. It was my responsibility to teach students skills and strategies that will enable them to interact in a global world. It was about more than learning the material; I had to teach them in such a way as they began to see patterns and not just the questions presented. I believe that my chief duty is to not only communicate knowledge but the confidence required to apply that knowledge to their careers and lives in the future. This is especially true of teaching students to learn English. Students must do more than see the sentences but have confidence that they can tackle any new word that they encounter on the page.

Whether it be elementary education, English, or the LSAT, I would consider it my duty to help students find the way to master these subjects for themselves and feel confident when they tackle them in the future.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I graduated in the Creative Writing Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which accepts less than 25% of applicants. Afterwards, I taught middle school, high school, and adult English language classes in China. For the next year, I dedicated myself to teaching first and second grade classes in the Dominican Republic. I am now pursuing my master's in English literature at the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona.

LSAT

I received a score of 172 on the LSAT, a score which placed me in the 99% percentile of test-takers. In addition, I previously taught a course on the LSAT for Kaplan prior to enrolling to obtain my master's.
