About Deborah

Over the last four years I have served as a member of the Adjunct Faculty at American National University. Teaching in the Humanities and Digital Technology disciplines to adult learners is a very insightful and rewarding experience. They are, in many instances, the parents and older siblings of students I taught at the secondary level, so it has been quite heartwarming to be an integral part of a “family of learners”. I enjoy the enlightened discourse, and explore new opportunities for higher critical thinking skills and interpersonal effectiveness with my students.

For the past four years, as well, I have thoroughly enjoyed the distinct honor of being a volunteer tutor in the Pittsylvania County Literacy Program. This experience, in addition to my public affairs radio program, has served to supplement my teaching career, by broadening my own knowledge base and creating numerous opportunities for me to enhance the lives of individuals who possess the will and drive to excel, and to move their careers forward, no matter the circumstances.

Teaching and learning at the secondary and college levels is defined by a patient, disciplined, and highly passionate approach to student’s academic and social development. Throughout my career in the Danville community I have found that principle to be universal. I have committed my life to being a compassionate and caring facilitator in a positive environment in which all may learn.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
