About Allison

You can teach a student a lesson for a day; but if you can teach him to learn by creating curiosity, he will continue the learning process as long as he lives. -- Clay P. Bedford

As an educator, this quote sums up my teaching philosophy. I steadfastly believe that children will learn willingly and eagerly if a teacher or tutor works diligently to discover and foster that curiosity which can motivate any student to explore any academic area.

I came to teaching late in my professional life, having spent many years as a full-time musician (I also teach voice and performance). After my two daughters started elementary school I made a decision to go back to school, finish my BA and pursue a teaching degree. Guilford College offered the liberal arts environment I desired and I embarked on an academic journey which not only changed my life path but also broadened my perspective on how vital the role of a teacher plays in shaping the futures of her students. The idea of discovery - discovering what interests a particular student, discovering how each student approaches a task or cognitively assesses information is absolutely crucial to how an educator develops and presents curriculum. Managing this feat of individual discovery in a regular classroom can be a Herculean effort, which many educators handle valiantly, but the one-to-one relationship tutoring offers is both a challenge and a rewarding opportunity for both student and teacher.

Subjects I have taught and tutored include Elementary math, science, social studies, grammar, vocabulary and literature. I have also tutored high school level world history, ELA, math and GED prep.

While I love teaching and tutoring ALL subjects, I admit that I have a love for literature and grammar. I believe that learning to express oneself correctly and write well are absolutely essential components to later success in life. I also believe that learning to do more than simply suffer through literature, to actually understand its depth and appreciate its themes can open so many academic doors in one's future. This year I tutored a student who said he "hated" literature and that he just didn't "get it." I designed a learning plan which helped him get inside the first book we tackled (Salinger's "Catcher in the Rye") in such a way which appealed to his individual learning style. He told me after we finished the lessons that it was the first time he'd ever enjoyed reading a book that was not Anime. Points for both of us!
Teaching has become a passion for me. I'd love to inspire your child to discover his or her strengths!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

When I was a kid whenever anyone asked me what I was going to be when I grew up I always said I was going to teach elementary school. Sometimes it takes a while for dreams to come to fruition and after spending years as a musician and journalist, and after having children of my own, I decided to go back to school and become a school teacher. What I found out during the process was that I love to inspire kids to discover their strengths! I also enjoy helping kids to use those skills to take positive steps towards developing areas that need work. I have taught at Vandalia Elementary and Erwin Montessori and tutored students in K-6th in various subjects (including my daughters who are in second and 4th grade) including math, ELA, Science and Social Studies.

General Music

Music is a gift, whether you're a beginner or professional and I have always incorporated some form of musicality into my teaching methods. As a professional musician I have spent years singing and playing music in club, festival, concert and private venues and can and declare with confidence that I know I could teach students everything one needs to know about swimming the choppy waters of the music business, from booking to gigging and everything in between. I have managed musical groups, guided choirs, traveled and toured, taught voice, and done work singing jingles and soundtracks. Those that do sometimes CAN teach. I'm one of those that can and do both.

Proofreading

English Majors are notorious sticklers for grammar and punctuation. I consider myself President of my local Grammar Police chapter (kidding, there's no such thing) and find myself proof-reading almost everything I read! I spent a decade as a journalist/editor for an entertainment magazine, which placed me in a position of constantly correcting, editing and sometimes rewriting the work of others. It's a task I still enjoy!

Public Speaking

As someone who has spent the last 20+ years in front of audiences I have to admit that public speaking is not something that gives me any real fright. However, when I fist began performing and having to interact with an audience I was frightened beyond belief. It took focus and practice to concentrate on my "text" and not how I was coming across to all of those eyes staring at me. There are definite ways to make the experience of speaking in public far less scary. Practice is your best course of action of course, but for beginners, preparation is the key and I can help to put together a presentation or speech that will put your audience at ease and put you (the performer) in the position of control.

Songwriting

In addition to my years as an educator I have been a working professional musician since 1985. I have also been writing songs and performing them for 20 years and just finished adding two original songs to an upcoming CD release by an all-female roster of songwriters. And finally, I have run a working band for the last 15 years and have mentored young singer-songwriters (one-on-one) who wanted to learn about the vagaries of the music business.

Voice (Music)

My background as a professional musician varies greatly and includes twenty-plus years experience as a vocalist, manager, band leader, rhythm guitarist, vocal arranger and booking agent. I have managed my own professional band for the last decade and currently play gigs which include festivals, weddings, concert venues and clubs all over the eastern Atlantic. It's my main job to make my band sound as fantastic as possible so regular rehearsals are fundamental (I try to rehearse with my band at a minimum of every other week). Vocal rehearsals, designed to tighten up harmonies on new material are vital to keeping our "sound" as harmonious as possible. In addition to managing my own band I also sing with other ensembles on an as-needed basis and have sung with groups as diverse as the US Air Orchestra, the Winston-Salem Symphony and background vocals for such artists as soul/gospel singer Deniece Williams and the 5th Dimension, among others. As a music educator, I designed and implemented an after-school music program for First Presbyterian Weekday Preschool in Greensboro and have mentored fledgling performers who were willing to accept the counsel of someone who "knows the ropes."
