About Laura

I believe tutoring is a great way to push students one step further in their education, and it can open their eyes to new points of view and encourage critical thinking. I always work to individualize tutoring plans to ensure students receive the maximum benefits using various techniques, such as multimedia sources, technology, and the latest teaching materials. A key element in tutoring is the connection a tutor makes with a student which gives him/her intrinsic motivation to want to improve and realize that learning is fun. My ultimate goal is to have students look forward to the tutoring session and contribute as much to the experience as I do.

I specialize in ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages), reading and hold state licenses in (ESOL) and Language Arts. In addition, I have done SAT test preparation as well as review for state school assessments. I have developed many effective study strategies for students from personal teaching reflection and using good teaching practices. I've had a variety of experiences that include teaching overseas and learning foreign languages such as Spanish and Portuguese.

I believe all students can succeed with proper instruction and motivation. I think learning happens when it is purposeful, relevant to daily life, and engages students. It should teach not only knowledge but also critical thinking skills. I think learning is important to social and personal development, and I strive to be an educator who is results-oriented and hoping to make a difference in students' lives.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Consistent and caring

She has our son go through his homework, and then works through some reading, then asks him what he learned. We are seeing his comprehension increase, as well as his abilities to sound out words. We are pleased.
