Ithaca College (Cinema Production)
I am a film maker, writer, singer, songwriter and actor currently living in Greensboro, NC. In the past, I have taught k-8 grade music, Korean martial arts, film making, computer use, acting and improv. I enjoy teaching and take great personal pride in helping students be the best they can be.
I believe in a hands-one approach to learning, rather than just through books. However, I realize each student has different needs and can adapt easily to a style that will work best for each person.
I have a BS in Cinema Studies from Ithaca College (1993)
1st Dan (black belt) in Tang Soo Do/Hap Ki Do from Kwon's Black Belt Academy, Paoli PA (1997)
1st Dan (black belt) in Tae Kwon Do from Tiger Kim's in Winston Salem, NC (2005)
In addition, I earned the equivalent of a Minor in Philosophy from St. Francis University in Loretto PA (1999)and briefly studied music at UNCG (3 semesters, 2000-2001).
I have studied and taught improv comedy for over 4 years (Idiot Box, Greensboro NC)
I have a very open demeanor and it is rare that I find someone I can't get along with. I am a film maker, writer, singer, songwriter and actor currently living in Greensboro, NC. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
From 1996-2007, I worked as a computer technician. Part of my job was training people in the use of computers and various applications and hardware. I thoroughly enjoyed helping people improve their computer skills. I taught people of various experience levels: those who had never used a computer before, expert users, and those who fall in between. There is always something new to learn.
I am proficient in Mac OSX, but also have extensive experience with Windows operating systems.
I have been playing guitar since 1988. My main instrument is the steel string acoustic, but I also play electric and a little classical. I write music and enjoy performing and recording. I have taught several people over the years and have learned that each person has a unique approach to learning the instrument. After the first two lessons, I usually have a good idea of the best way to help my students learn and grow with the guitar.
I have studied various martial arts over the past 15 years - karate, kung fu, tai chi and various Korean forms. My blackbelts are in Tang Soo Do and Hap Ki Do (earned 1997 in Paoli, PA) and Olympic Style Tae Kwon Do (earned 2006 in Winston Salem, NC). I taught several classes at my school in Pennsylvania, and helped my fellow students at the North Carolina school. I would be best suited to giving a starting foundation in Korean martial arts (Tae Kwon Do/Tang Soo Do).
I was raised Catholic and went to Catholic elementary, middle and high schools. In high school we studied world religions, and I was exposed to different schools of thought in college. I became an active youth group leader at my parish after college, and eventually entered a Franciscan seminary to see if I wanted to become a priest. I left after two years.
Part of the process of discernment there was getting a "minor" (no degree was awarded for all the classes taken) in philosophy, and studying the history of the Franciscan order.
I have since stopped going to church, and have studied more eastern schools of thought (Taoism and Buddhism). I have a unique approach to religion, and extensive personal experience. I also love to teach, and have taught various subjects from music to computers to acting.
For the past two years I have been working as a freelance film maker/video producer. I have made several award-winning short films and worked on local commercials and corporate projects. Since 2004 I have taught a handful of film making classes for the City of Greensboro and Community Theater of Greensboro. My students have gone on to make features in LA, award-winning shorts and commercials and innovative computer-animated films. I enjoy teaching film making almost as much as I enjoy making films.
My teaching starts with theory and history, but quickly moves into hands-on production. I believe in learning by doing, especially in the realm of film making.
